Question Oily Question for the wise ones...

Hey everyone, first of all MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone!! 2nd, I have 5w-40 in my pickup currently and on cold mornings, the pressure gauge likes to sit at the top of the "normal area" for about 15 minutes which is kinda high i think, anyways, im going to be driving it to the mountains in a few days and was wondering if i need to change the oil to a better type for cold weather, or if ill be ok with the higher pressure?

Thanks,

I run 15w-40 year round and my aftermarket oil pressure gauge pegs at 100psi on a cold morning and will sit there for about 10-15 minutes of driving. Your perfectly normal.

Just to confirm again.... You condition is absolutely normal. I spoke with a Cummins Engineer at the North American Truck Show in Louisville, Kentucky a few years back and he advised me that oil pressure should be governed at about 65psi during operation and should never drop below 25psi at idle. He did mention that upon cold starts it is very possible to spike at or above 100psi. Our other trucks (Sterlings) have a real oil pressure gauge and they follow his statements to the letter every day.

You're fine, don't worry about a thing!
