Oil getting into bellhousing from OUTSIDE??

Had a clutch job done friday, as I suspected clutch was saturated with oil and subsequently smoked.

I had suspected the rear main seal was leaking, tranny shop swears that neither the rear seal or tranny input seal was leaking. They said the oil has come from outside the bellhousing, I did have a bad vac pump leak and it was slobbering oil for some time. Is this possible???

I had explicitly stated that if there weas oil in the bellhousing to change rear seal, so I really hope they are right and I don't have a second screwed clutch.

How's the valve cover gasket? You could have oil running down the back of the motor from up there.

I can't see how enough oil from the vacuum pump could make its way into the bellhousing to mess up the clutch.
