Which oil filter?

I am kind of confused on oil filters. I know to use Fleetguard oil filters. What I don’t know is the difference between the Stratapore or the Standard filter. I don’t need to know the tech specs. Just the correct one to use. I only have 6000k miles on her now so I won’t be using synthetic yet. ???

Unfortunately I can't help you with the specs... I use Baldwin Filters for everything.... ;D Just about everyone else seems to use the fleetguards though, I'm sure one of them could give you the specs! All I know is you want the stratapore! ;D

Re:Which oil filter?

Good question. I'd like to know also. Does the stratapore contain a synthetic fiber filter media? Strata, or to stratify, means to form or arrange in layers. It may just be a different way a cellulose media(which is refined cardboard) is packaged within the filter housing. I know the standard Fleetguard for the Cummins ISB is a cellulose filter, and I've seen one that is a microglass also.

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/ provides some valuable info on quite a few oil filter brands. If time and $$$ permit this winter, I'd like to conduct a similar study on the filters specific for the Dodge Cummins application, to see what can't be seen from the outside.

Re:Which oil filter?

Ah, a search of the world wide web brings some info from the manufacturer: http://www.fleetguard.com/en/product...ratapore.jhtml

Yes, it is a synthetic filter media that is layered. But I did not find any specs such as micron removal or percent of efficiency, etc.

The only other oil filter that I know of that uses synthetic filter media is Mobil1, which retails for about $12 around here.
