nv 4500 grinding into 3rd only?

Well, its been coming on for awhile. Getting on it off a light and it would grind going into 3rd otherwise fine. Had a d-max along side me at lights yesterday and we left going hard... grind into 3rd and now its do'in it all the time now. It will shift into all gears when stopped but when your moving no way to get her into 3rd just skipping it for now.I can leave lights in 3rd though.Guessing sinc's are bad and other suggestions apprecaited. Can you float it into 3rd? The synchros in my dually are pretty well worn, and its easier to float the gears than use the clutch. The original tranny in it (before it dropped 5th) wore out 3rd as well. But that is the gear thats shifted into the most, in my experience at least.

Nope can't float it in,can out though letting off Go pedal. No did not win, he's got alittle more$$$$ under hood than my stocker.I guess if you want to race you better have a auto. Is there anyway to build these 4500's up to withstand speed shifting or do I need to go back to driving school.Nate

If you want to race, you definitely need an auto. How in the world are you skipping 3rd gear though? I would think if you take it up to red-line in 2nd you'd still almost stall out going into 4th. The gaps between 2-3 and especially 3-4 are pretty big.

I will drop down to 35km/h in 4th in my truck and then take off again. No reason you can't get up to 35km/h in 2nd.

I run her up to 2500rpm's in second and dump her into 4th. I would be fubarred if I was hauling more my daughter and myself though .Nate

3 is notorious for going out as well as 5th gear backing off. My 03 is in the shop now with broken 5th grear and probably an over haul only 160k hard miles. Got another NV4500 with about 250k with 3rd gear not working and not staying 1st. Needing over hauled. Great tranny but come from the factory already powered with their designed limits. Plan on an over haul and while your at an upgraded main shaft with the 5th gear fix (quad4x4 comes to mind) Then drive the heck out of it for another 150k miles. That is my plan. My 3rd isn't out yet but only cuz it has been double clutched most of it life but it won't got with out a double clutch now so only a matter of time before it goes.
