No muffler

I have a 99 cummins I was told by a cummins mechanic that not having a muffler, just a open exhaust would eventually destroy the turbo is that true?

Thanks

Get a new mechanic.

Unless he's saying that a turbo with no pipe on it at all will kill it. But who would have that?

Mine has no muffler, love the sound. Take the silencer out and hear the turbo more.

I agree with 1-2-3. If the tech is saying that by replacing your stock muffler with straight pipe you'll kill the turbo, then he's an idiot and has no business holding a wrench in a Cummins shop.

I still have a hard time believing that you could harm the turbo even by completely removing the exhaust system. Probably wouldn't do your firewall and engine compartment any good though.

No pipe on a turbo during a hard pull would probably make a cool video. I would think it would burn right thru a firewall. You might can actually weld with it.

I had about 140 thousand miles on the 99 and now 108 thousand on the 04 with no mufflers. if a turbo was gonna get messed up by that i would have seen several turbos already. I believe that'll be about 248,000 miles of sweet strait pipe tunes. They oughta make a radio station that plays only strait pipe. I'd set it and leave it there forever.
