A new noise

Hello all,

I was towing my 5th wheel this weekend, when I came to hill and stepped on it to power up the hill a loud whirring noise started. From that point on any load on the truck and I would get the noise. It is not a high pitched noise like a bearing. I did not seen to have a loss of power and the noise
does not track with RPM or speed. Seems to be linked to the load on the engine. It does not make the noise when at idle.

At first I thought it was the turbo??
A friend took a look at it and thought it might be a leak at the exhaust manafold??

The truck is 99, stock with an auto. I have 87K miles.

Any Ideas??
Any one know if an exhaust leak is covered on the 100k warrenty??

Thanks,
Ron

Re:A new noise

An exhaust leak is a possibility. Look for some telltale soot signs.

Your engine probably doesn't have these manifold bolt retention straps installed. My 98.5 doesn't.

http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2001/09-002-01.htm

Another possibility is a slight boost leak at one of the hose clamps. But I would think that would sound different than what you describe. Since your power levels are OK, a boos leak is not likely.

Re:A new noise

Might be your waste gate opening. I have had this happen a couple of times under load pulling the 5er and had to back off to 1900 rpm to get the gate to reset.

Re:A new noise

Found the problem,
The clamp holding the rubber boot between the turbo and the pre-cooler came off. I could not see this from above. But after I crawled under and started looking hard I found it.

Barney, Thanks for the TBS. I had found my bolts loose about a year ago. I did not know the retainer was available.
I'm going to see about getting them put on so it does not happen again.

Every time I post here I learn new stuff, Thanks Ron
