Oil report; Amsoil 15W-40
Thought I'd share my oil analysis report on my truck.

Oil- Amsoil 15W-40 full synthetic
Filter- Amsoil SDF80
Air filter- Amsoil 2 stage oiled
Miles on oil- 6,275 (installed 4/1/03)
Miles on truck- 87,255
Sample date- 7/7/03
Lab- Blackstone

Elements in parts per million.
First # is test data, 2nd is universal average.

Aluminum 3/4
Chromium 1/3
Iron 13/44
Copper 1/3
Lead 2/3
Tin 2/1

Molybdenum 1/40
Nickel 0/0
Manganese 0/1
Silver 0/0
Titanium 0/0
Potassium 1/1

Boron 0/40
Silicon 3/9
Sodium 3/3

Calcium 3796/2529
Magnesium 14/466
Phosphorus 1087/1088
Zinc 1234/1280
Barium 1/0

Properties;
test values/should be

SUS viscosity@210F 74.4/68-80
Flashpoint 475F/>410F
Fuel <0.5%/<2.0%
Antifreeze 0/0
Water 0/<0.05%
Insolubles 0.5%/<0.8%

Blackstone comments;
"No problems showed up in the intial sample from your Cummins. All wear read at or below averages for this type of engine, which is a very good indication of normal wearing parts and careful operation. The universal averages show normal wear after about 6400 miles on the oil. Insolubles(oil oxidation due to heat, use, and blow-by) were low at 0.5%, showing good oil filtration. No fuel dilution or antifreeze was found. The TBN read 7.7, so the oil could have gone longer. Try 8500 miles for the next sample. Nice Cummins!"

Overall I'm impressed, but then again I should be, as this oil is nearly $20 a gallon, and that oil filter is $14. I thought for sure the silicon(airborne dirt) number would be higher, as I did drive considerable distance on dusty, gravelled roads in Canada back in May, but the air filter appears to be doing it's job. I changed the oil filter at sample time, added 1 1/2 quarts make-up oil, and am continuing to run it. Guys, the Cummins is a clean machine!

Interesting, since your truck is pretty similar to mine, other than miles on the clock. I got my last report from Blackstone, and numbers were nearly identical to yours, some slightly higher, some lower - as well as the suggestion to go longer between changes if I wanted...
Main difference in my case, is that my analysis was done at 10,000 miles on the truck, and 5000 miles on the oil - mostly hard towing - and I have a Frantz bypass filter installed - I use DELO 400 15/40.
I was really looking for lower numbers, since I was doing better with my '91 - but it had 115,000 miles on the last analysis, so was fully broken in...
Anyway, you and I both got a good report, and we're making a LOOOONG trip this fall, and spending a couple of months back east and in Florida - all RV towing miles - the old girl SHOULD be pretty well broken in by the time we get back... (the truck too...)

I have used Blackstone since day one on this truck, just got my latest oil report last week. My numbers are, as Gary said, basically identical to yours. I used Delo 400 for the first 30K miles, since I had a stock pile of it, have used Amsoil 15W-40 for the last 35K. I change filters at 5K, oil at 10K intervals, SDF80 full flow Amsoil filter only.

;D

Tom

The Cummins is again, a clean running engine. You definitely don't need to be running an expensive synthetic to get low wear numbers. In fact, changing oil at less than 5,000 miles, using any diesel rated oil, is probably a waste with this engine. I don't think the PSD or Dmax can achieve such good wear numbers.

Just a note, I'm out of warranty on the engine, thus the reason I used the Amsoil oil filter. Otherwise, I think the Fleetguard Stratapore is a better value. From all the hype I've heard of Amsoil, I thought I'd give it a try. It's not bad stuff, but I don't know if the extra cost is really worth it in the long run??

Got my first Oil report on Moday. Running Rotella 15/40 with 33k and my numbers are almost the same. I live in a very dusty area in ruarl TX and change my air and oil filters often. I did expect my Silicone numbers to be higher due to the dusty roads I drive on. Overall I am very impressed with the cummins. ;D
