Smile Oil report for Amsoil 5w30 HDD

Below is my report showing that the oil holds up well for being in the engine a full year and a Fleetguard oil filter. Even though I drove 408 miles less and 5.5 months longer in the engine then the first report I was surprised to see the TBN 0.36 higher. Also the winter temps were about 15 degrees colder this report compared to the first report on 5w30 HDD, -25 below instead of -10 below zero. The only changes were I threw out the factory air filter an replaced it with a Fleetguard and I did not use any 2 cycle oil during this sample period. I still used Power Service during the cold winter just like in my last report and my normal use of Lucas fuel additive.

I'm very happy with it and now know that once I get a by pass system on it I may be able to run the oil for 2 years with just replacing the oil filter every 12 months. I know the oil cost more then off the shelf oil but its nice to see it will last a lot longer then many other brands can.

Didn't know you werent running a by-pass...

Question...what in that actually "says" it's safe to keep running the oil? Or did they say something else in the report? I just sent off my first (ever) oil analysis and should be getting it back shortly...

And why 5w30?

Amsoil does my UOA's as I like that I don't pay extra for TBN count. Anyway the report states " No Corrective action required. The oil is suitable for continued use. Resample at next regular interval." As long as the TBN is above 2 its still good to use or so I'm told. My self If I did a sample and had left the oil in the engine and it showed a TBN of 3 I would be looking to change out the oil with in a short time period.

As for why 5w30, I like the extra mpg I get from it, it flow well in cold temps and its the best oil Amsoil makes. I saw a gain of .65 mpg and a quiter sounding engine when I went from 5w40 Rotella to the 5w30. So from Delvac 15w40 to Amsoil 5w30 HDD I've gained a total of 1.15 mpg. Also my engine runs 50 RPM less at 70 MPH with 5w30 HDD then it did with Rotella 5w40 oil.

Looks good...I don't know much about Iowa, but I know it gets just as cold as some parts of Canada. Nice to see some results from 30 weight, as it is used less than 15 or 5W40's.

It will be very interesting to see what the by-pass system does. Since the report cam back that no corrective action was required, and your TBN was still nice & high, I sure would have been tempted to let it stay and sample again in another 6 months. Also interesting that you are running an oil that many say is too light for our engines.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Don/t waste money and time on bypass, with the EOA you got, the engine will never know the difference. Change the filter at one year and add a qt of oil to refresh. Should more that take care of engine.
No buy your 50 RPM less at same speed. It is a mechancial connection and no way the RPM will vary in lockup at same speed. Think about it!!!!

Thundercraft,

I've read on other forums from other Dodge owners in So Cal using 5w30 HDD with out any problems. The newer engine were made to run on 5w synthetic oil and why I tried it out the first time. If I still lived in Eugen Oregon I would be using there Synthetic 10W-30/SAE 30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil (ACD) instead of the 5w30 HDD as the west side of OR does not get all that cold in the winter time. The 10w-30 has a pour point of -33 degrees that is -3 degrees colder then the pour point of Mobil Delvac 1300 15w40.

All I know is my tach reads 50 RPM less then is did before at 70 MPH, as for why I don't know. Maybe the engine does not have to work as hard with the lighter full synthetic oil in it compared to non synthetic oil at a heavier weight.

If you are going with Amsoil, you will either want to go with the HD 5W-30 S3000 or the Marine 15W-40. Both are specifically made for diesels. I use the S3000 5W-30.

The 15w40 has a pour point of -42C or -44F and the 5w30 is -50C or -58 F. I know the Series 3000 5w30 HDD cost more then the 15w40 but I think its worth its price and it will flow better in the colder temps. I think its always a good idea to use the lowest weight oil you can in the winter so that you have better oil flow at start up.
