New diesel owner (stupid questions)

I just bougtht a 02 2500 4x2 with 87,000 check engine light was on and dealer said they replaced the lift pump and the injector pump. How do I know they replaced these? where is the lift pump located? Would this have been a cummins warranty issue? Also any ideas what mileage to expect on long highway drives? Haven't got the truck yet due to the work they are doing to it and driving me crazy wondering what to expect. Thanks for any replies.

WOW,....29 views and no response?.....you guys are slippin'.

First of all, welcome to the site.
Second, the only dumb question is the one that's never asked.
Third, check out the tech facts button at the top of the header.
It's a link to a bunch of good info on your RAM.

The Injection and lift pump should have been replaced under warranty as long as the previous owner didn't put a "Performance Enhancing" device on the injection system.

Is the CEL still on?
If so, the dealer needs to check to see what trouble codes are stored in the memory.

In the illustration, number 1 is the Lift Pump, number 17 is the Injection pump.

As for mileage on the road, it can vary of course.
It depends on transmission type, axle ratio, tire size, weather conditions, load carried, trailer size, quality of fuel, driving speed, and engine modifications.
Unloaded, cruise control set at 65 mph, clear weather, my best is 20.5 on the highway.
That's not too shabby for a 7,000 pound dually.

Enjoy your stay, ask away.
Try the search feature to find more info on a desired subject.

Thanks for becoming a part of the DTR family.

What he said about the FAQ is good advice and welcome to the group. I am a new owner of about 3 months and I have found this site to be invaluable. I started reading some months ago so I would be a little more knowledgeable when I made my purchase.

Thanks for the info, that tech facts and faq section has alot of good info. One other question, have seen alot about vp44's. Is this the injector pump? My truck is a 02 2500 4x2 single rear tires 3:55 gears with a six speed tranny stock wheels and tires as far as I know it is completley stock and most driving will be 60 to 80 Mph with no load on the interstate anyone have a similar truck? and if so what are you getting for mileage?

Yes, "VP-44" = Injection Pump.

You should expect to see somewhere in the range of 18MPG. Rpm's play a big role here, once I start running over approx. 1850 RPM's I see a drop in mileage.
You should be able to run about 65-68 MPH no problem and still get good numbers.

It stands to reason your mileage may vary (and will go down considerably at upwards of 80mph).

I have a similar truck with auto, I do have a box on it (which gives you a little improvement if you keep your foot out of it) and I commute 50 miles daily. In the winter I average 18mpg, summer 22mpg (this is 90% highway).

I also have a tonneau, drive like grandma while commuting (cruise @ 60mph) so a lot is in my favor for fuel mileage.

The funniest thing is, I don't even pay for my fuel, by employer does...but I feel guilty about driving such a big fuel guzzling beast of a truck on their dime, so I take it easy on 'em

Got my truck today new lift pump, injector pump, oil pan gasket. Drove 130 miles and got 22.9 MPG, on winter mix. I am very happy. That engine is one nice running piece hope to have many more miles like these, man what a great feeling rumbling down the road with this great machine. Started it cold and noticed the idle fluxuating, thanks to this site I know it's normal. This is a great site with endless information. Thanks to all who devote their time to this cause.

dont forget to calculate your mileage by hand. a few times to check your overhead computer .. i find mine is of by 2.6 miles this probably due to tires.

also i seem to get 12mpg around town and 15 on the hiway.. unless i cant keep it under 80.. i did figure at 100mph i get 12 mpg. slight tail wind .
