Need tips for pulling the oil pan
Need tips for pulling the oil pan
99 3500 2 wheel drive with automatic trans.
Looks like I need to get to the tone ring.
Anyone done this without a vehicle lift?
I have an engine hoist and a bike jack (for the tranny)
Just looking for tips to save time and make it less of a pain.

I personally have not done that job, but read that you can lift the motor/trans by removing fan and valve cover then loosen motor mount bolts and lift motor so oil pan can be removed. Or either you have to remove the trans.
I personally watched my dealer mechanic do this on my truck. Bear in mind it is a 4x4 but he did say it's the same on 2wd's also.
Remove the fan and shroud, pull the thru bolts on the engine mounts, put a jack on the harmonic balancer and jack the motor as high as needed to remove the pan. Before the pan will come out/off, reach in and remove the oil pump pickup bolts, the pan and the pick up come out together.
He replaced my pan gasket, start to finish in 35 minutes while I stood there the whole time. Granted he had a lift but instead of "jacking" anything up and down with a floor jack, he used the lift and a tall stand to lift the motor by dropping the whole truck.
A month later, I ended up doing the same thing in my shop here at home because the leaking pan gasket was actually a cracked oil pan. I did it with a floor jack, the truck sitting on the floor, start to finish in a little over an hour and a half.
Hope it helps
