Hard start issue

Hello, I'm new to the forum and I have noticed a few people with the same problem I have. The problem is, The truck starts well when it is cold but after it is warm it cranks a long time before it starts. I had the VP44 removed and tested as it was still under warrenty. It is fine, I was going to try the crankshaft position sensor next, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
it would perhaps be worthwhile to have sensors read with dealers Starscan tool to assure they are in correct range and no fault codes popping up. Check LP pressure under all operating conditions to assure pressure adequate but not excessive. Have the valves ever been adjusted?? Any leaks including weepage???

hard start issue

I have had it hooked up and there are no codes. I have checked for leaks and gone over the fuel system. By the way, I have Fass fuel not the stock lift pump. Every now and then it will start right up even when hot. More times than not it cranks for awile. 175,000 miles no valve adjustment. Still trying to figure this thing out but Crankshaft sensor is the only thing I can think of that may be interfering with fuel timing.

What year is it? I just had this issue. It was after the truck had some old winter fuel in it, but even after that burned out it did it. When it doesn't want to start, try unplugging the Engine Coolant Temp sensor, right by the thermostat, and see if it starts then. Mine would start right up when I did that, so I replaced the ECT sensor and it starts right up now.

I did try that once, and it did start right up. I thought since I had no codes and my temp gauge was working, it was just a quincidence. Did you have codes or temp gauge working?

Click on User CP in the upper left and you can fill your signature with truck info.

I had no codes, and the temp gauge worked just fine. But when I unplugged it the truck started right up. So I replaced it anyway, and the truck starts fine now.

THe other procedure I tried, which sort of helped, was calibrating the APPS voltage and doing the reset at the same time. If you search for APPS you can find it.

Thanks alot, I think rather than put the crank position sensor on , I will try the coolant temp sensor first.

I don't have a fuel pressure gauge, but I do have a low fuel warning light, it is not on. The truck is running very well, no misses or anything. When the truck is cold, it will fire right up.

Sounds like a VP 44 diaphragm issue, hard start in warm weather.

My fuel pressure was fine as well, sat at 16 or so the whole time, but still just replacing the "still working" ECT did the trick. Let us know how it goes.

You should invest in a fuel pressure guage. Others have reported intermittant hard starts with high fuel pressure. You have a Fass pump so you should be concerened by the possibility of fuel pressure being to high.

I have been thinking about getting a fuel pressure gauge and problably will soon. I do think I will order the ECT sensor and change it. Its the original so changing it can't hurt. Thanks for the help guys, I'll let you know.
