Need ECM help.

Can an ECM out of a 2001 DODGE 2500 with a 5.9, 5 speed manual transmission be reflashed (programed) to replace an ECM on a 2001 DODGE 3500, 6 speed manual transmission with an HO Cummins engine? Both ECM's have the same Cummins part number (3947412).

I don’t know what software differences there would be for a extra gear and a few extra leaves in the pack . I’m guessing that’s why the same part number.

Hmm, I am pretty sure there is a difference between the standard and HO because I had to wait a week in Montana to get an HO ecm overnighted from Michigan to get my truck up and running...but that doesn't mean they couldn't be fooled with by a computer literate guy.....the dealership just couldn't do it or I'm guessing they would have, they had 2 non HO ecm's in stock.

The HO motor uses a different injection pump and the motor runs a higher compression ratio that the SO motors.
I would guess the computers would be different.

It would also guess that it would be able to be re flashed, but that would be a question for the guys who you would ask to re-flash it.

I installed the ECM for 5 speed manual transmission today. It started right up on the first try. All the gauges and cruise control are working. I would like to get the ECM flashed for my HO with 6 speed manual transmission but it is running a lot better than I expected.

Maybe you would not want the re-flash... I remember when the HO came out that folks put on SO VP44s to get a nice boost in performance over the HO.
So if it runs good and does not smoke.. why change it?

That's interesting info....I remember the HO guys going with SO pumps for more fuel flow or something like that, easier to hot rod or such...

Define "a lot better than expected" if you would. I'm stuck in limp mode due to a failed ECM in my '02 HO 6 spd and having trouble finding a replacement. That would possibly make the search much easier.

Thanks! Randy.

ECM programming info regarding ECM replacements:

TSB 18-019-02A

There seems to be six versions of the firmware in the ECM which depends on two criteria:

1 - Emissions - 49 state (Federal) or California
2 - Transmission - Auto, 5 speed, or 6 speed

I am pretty sure I still have a 6 speed '01 ECM in my shop from a truck I drove , before I parted.
