Lost power steering / brakes

Howdy All,
My buddy has a 01 Dodge Cummins 4X4 with 169K miles. He stopped today to get fuel and as he was turning into the station he lost power steering and power brakes. His belt is still place and the fluid levels are fine. Is there a vacuum pump that can fail on these trucks?
Thanks,
Craig

The power steering pump is behind the vaccum pump. he has hyroboost brakes. If his fluid is fine the pump must have went bad. They usally sound real bad first, but something could have broke in side.

Fan belt does not drive the Pump, the vacuum pump is only for the cruise and heater controls, kinda sounds like the ears on the pump sheared off/or pump quit, you will have to pull the pump to check it,
the above is just a guess, but I had mine apart not that long ago, and that what I'd say was most likely

Uhh, a vacuum pump for our trucks is in the $2000 range new. It is highly unlikely that he lost the vacuum pump.

Try the power steering pump. They are quite a bit more common.

Power steering pumps are pretty cheap. I think I paid $160 from o'reilly's for mine. Word of advice though, get the vacuum pump rebuild kit from fixinrams.com and rebuild the vacuum pump while your in there. It's so much easier to pull the vacuum pump and power steering pump out as an assembly and the video that comes with the rebuild kit shows you how to rebuild the vacuum pump. It's very simple to do.

I bought it from o'reilly's so I'd imagine it was a reman. The $160 was including the $45 core charge on it.

Howdy All,
Just making sure I am following along here. Is the vacuum pump 160.00 or is that the power steering pump? If the power steering pump went out would that cause him to lose his power brakes as well? I want to make sure I have all my info right so I can help him out.
Thanks,
Craig

It's a hydro-boost sys. there for your power brakes come from your power steering pump. and yes the P/S pump is what were pricing
