lift-pump question

Hello to everyone. This is Myles from the Country Piano Shop in Watkins Glen, NY. I need some advice regarding lift pumps.

My 2002 24 valve motor has gone thru 5 lift pumps since the truck was new. We just replaced the pump again and the psi wasn't too impressive. We also changed the fuel filter but that did not increase the pressure really. It idles at about 13-15psi, cruises at about 8-10psi and pulls down to 5-7psi while accelerating. The 5-7psi worries me!

My question: Isn't there any pumps made that run at a higher psi that won't drop so low when accelerating? I'm afraid that before too long it will drop down below 5....and then I'll have a mess on my hands. I'm looking for a pump that will solve this problem. Can anyone offer some advice?

Thank you.....Myles

Sounds like there may be a problem with delivery to the LP to have gone thru so many Check the tank conections to make sure the feed line isnt pulling air? Or maybe theres a voltage problem to the pump? Are these new pumps from DC or Cummins? Other than that you may want to look into a system like the FASS or RASP
Good luck.

Ratsun.....these were all lift pumps that were Cummins. In fact, the mechanic put 2 on in a row that were both defective? Can you beat that!!!

Please tell me what "FASS" and "RASP" pumps are and maybe a link to their site.

But before you do that, what would you say is "normal" psi for idle, running and W.O.T. I'm very curious. Thanks for your time.

I have an 01, and these are my numbers. Idle=15, cruising= 13, and WOT= 12. Hope this helps.

Yeah, those are real good psi's. My WOT is 1/2 of what your's is and my pump is new! Figure that one out. The mechanic thought maybe the fuel filter was plugged so he changed it....but there was no difference.

Maybe the worst thing I ever did was to have a psi gauge installed.....I'm always watching it! I guess the only good thing about it is that when it drops below 5psi, it's time to change the L.P. before it takes out the Injector pump! I'd rather spend $135 than 10 x's that amount for an I.P.

Drop the tank and check for crud jamming things up in there.

There is no reason to go through that many LP's in that short of time.

Check the volatage at the LP as well, low or high volts could shorten the life.
Don't know what it should be seeing, but 12 volts sounds like a good starting point.

Maybe someone else knows how many amps a good LP pulls, if it's pulling too many or not enough,
perhaps a short in the wiring is messing things up.

Agree that if your truck is stock. the factory lift pump should be fine.
In answer to your request... http://www.dieselpp.com/ for the FASS.

my 2002 runs about the same. it has not changed in 10,000 miles since the time of gauge install. i have 52,000 miles now. i dont feel that the pressures i see as well as yours myles are anything to worry about. i am measuring mine after the fuel filter. from what i have observed a lot of failed lift pumps could of been prevented if a fuel pressure gauge was used. the injection pump will fail when the lift pump is delivering very low to zero pressure. my lift pump passes the volumn tests. so for now i wont replace my lift pump untill i am a lot lower on delivery pressures.

I believe you don't ever want the FP to go below 7 PSI under any circumstances.

Thanks for your input njoverkill. Funny you mentioned that :

"I believe you don't ever want the FP to go below 7 PSI under any circumstances"

My mechanic just now called me and said that 5psi was considered within the proper operating limits as stated by Cummins. Anything below that would be dangerous. So I'll just have to keep a watchful eye on it.

Thanks to all for your replies.

Mine has been running about 8 for the last 20,000 miles (since I got the truck in Jan.) It has 90,000 on it. OH 2003 what about an elec fuel pump? A friend of mine put one of these on his but he has a 99.
from Summit racing part CRT-P4601HP
I have just purchased a tst box but have not got it yet.
I don't have to bucks for the really good pump at this time
