Lift Pump Question??

I have been a lurker for a while and now I have a question. I was always told the only dumb question is the one never asked! So I'm asking. My boy has a 2001 CTD 3500 it currently has lift pump and injector pump issues, he got a package deal for injector pump and lift pump. Problem is the lift pump they sent is the one that mounts to block behind fuel filter and at some point his was converted over to in tank. If we hook new lift pump back at stock position do we need to remove in tank pump or will new pump pull fuel thru it. If it needs to be removed what is the best way to remove it. Any and All Help is Appreciated, Ray

Take the new lift pump and see if you can blow air throught it on the inlet side. If so and there does not seem to be restriction than yes it should work. You will have to wire it in with a relay otherwise it may Be to much draw on the ecm.
Do you have a fuel pressure guage? If not you need one asap.

I would remove the intank pump. But, many have used it along with the engine mounted pump.

If the intank pump fails, it will most likely kill the new lift pump and the VP44 after that.

Easiest way to remove it is with the new Draw Straw that's coming out. It replaces the intank pump and allows for a positive suction location.

Welcome to the site, an awesome place and the info here is amazing. Yes, get gauges asap. Fuel pressure is the most important on these trucks. You can get a good set economically from genos garage or vulcan performance. When getting a lift pump do not scrimp on a cheap unit, it will only bring you grief. Go with a fass or airdog lift pump. I only got the lift pump and not the fuel/air separator.
