Lift pump pressure gauge

So I've read alot of threads on the subject, and I seem to still be confused.

This is what I've gathered:
I want to monitor lift pump pressure, because if that starts to drop, it could lead to VP44 death within a short time.

That said, I see that the connection on top of the fuel filter nearest the center is the most common tap, with some banjo being another.

Does the filter cap tap monitor incoming pressure from the LP or from the VP44? Need I monitor both?

All I want to do is prevent (or foresee) a VP44 failure. The truck is bone stock (even the air filter), so going overboard is not needed.

Thanks.

a few ways to do it . you could install a low fuel pressure light or a gauge. I
Installed a gauge at the inlet of the VP44 not the filter it shows the pressure at the pump and if the filter is plugging up . others have diff. set ups, I just feel better that way. also its no guaranty to stop VP failer but if your LP dies it wont be cause of that

ok I seem to get the idea of doing the output of the filter. Maybe do both, to see both LP output and filter quality.

That said, Are those 2 ports on top of the housing the best places to tap in?

If I do tap in there, are there any special requirements I need to meet to keep the setup long lasting (not shaking itself apart)?

I used the schrader valve just before the entry to the VP. Easy to do. Got everything I needed from Geno's Garage.

Cheap and easy. (Which pretty much describes me, too)

I did the same thing about a week ago. Total cost around $125 and 2 1/2 hours time. I got the westach 0-16 w/sending unit, 18" line to tap onto the port coming out of the VP, and the steering column mount from geno's. I did it just in time, my new lift pump(#3) will be here tomorrow!

Here is my setup.
I am monitoring post-filter pressure.
When I see a drop in my Wide Open Throttle pressure, I know it's time to change the fuel filter.
Low pressure at idle means it's time to look at the Lift Pump.

Be careful tightening the fittings into the test ports, use thread sealant (NOT teflon tape).
They are NPT threads into an aluminum housing.
Too much = cracked housing.

I'm using the test port off the vp44, works great but don't over tighten it...
