Lift Pump?

Howdy, am new here but am desperate for a lift pump answer.
I was wondering if any of you guys had the same symptom as I am having when you had lift pump problems. I have an 02 truck with 9000 miles. Just installed Geno's electric fuel pressure guage and am getting funny readings. At idle I get 15 psi, 8 at WO. Gauge reads fine at idol, but when driving, If I let up on the peddle--most of the time my pressure drops to 2-3 psi in a few secounds and then to 0. If I stop and restart my truck, pressures return to normal-as long as I'm giving it some peddle. If I let her coast it drops back to 0. Gauge is connected to the Schrader fitting on the VP44. Changed the filter 2500 miles ago. Oh, at cruising speed am getting 12 psi.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to get the pump replaced under warranty, but I cannot get the pressure to drop unless I'm driving the truck.

Re:Lift Pump?

That fitting should not be used for gauges. Idle test only.
The fitting is too close to the return port of the pump (fuel overflow) When you let off the overflow valve opens and takes the pressure from hurting your VP44.
Your pressures seem fine, stop worring. The lift pumps aren`t as bad as everyone makes them out to be.
Danny

Thanks danlit for the prompt reply. Your answer sure eases my mind. I guess I'll try to relocate my connection this weekend-if I can (supposed to get a heavy rain and wind event here starting tomorrow). Really appreciate the info.

Keep in mind that the electric senders are nototrious for having a short life in our trucks. Eventually they ALL fail. Food for thought.

Glenn

Re:Lift Pump?

Ruger:
Genos Garage sells a tapped banjo bolt and you can put in the place of the one on the bottom of the fuel filter cannister still get post pump pressure, a little farther back from the vp 44 and then hook up a grease gun hose, ss braided line or whatever your choice and mount the sender on the firewall or wherever your choice is. It reduces vibration and the vp44 pulses. I found that a needle valve open just enough to get a pressure reading really helped my gauge. The banjo bolt 5 bucks the needle valve 3 bucks. my 2 cents.

Re:Lift Pump?

I bought all new high flow banjo bolts and one tapped one. I mounted the sender on an 18" grease gun hose.

Re:Lift Pump?

Thanks guys, your great. I ordered the banjo and will be installing it when it arrives. Will move the 18" greasegun hose and sender to the bottom of the fuel filter cannister.
Never thought about the location I had it mounted originaly being to close to the VP44.
