Jet Fuel Usage

So my dad's boss has an '01 and he burns waste jet fuel a lot. He has gone through 3 IPs and wonders why his stock cummins sucks. The only thing I can think of is that the jet fuel he burns might have some contaminants and additives that aren't good for the IP seals and such. Any ideas?

Ive heard of people running jet fuel, but they add 2 stroke oil or something else to bring up the lubricity.

Jet fuel is very dry, no lubricity. If I were running it and I dont think I would hesitate too I would just make sure and use an additive that specifically addresses lubricity. I would do some research as to which additives really help that issue vs those that claim too. There was a study going around a while back (am sure with a bit of searching you could find it on here) that listed the before and after lubricity rating of a list of additives. (it did not include all but quite a few) the results were somewhat suprising to me. Some of them including some of the big names your fuel actually had less lubricity with the additive than without.

A thread with the study results a bit harder to read than the original but the info is there

Yeah, he runs 2 stroke through it, but I just can't figure out why he keeps running through IPs.... I guess I'll just never go to Vegas with him....

How much 2 stroke is he running in each tank? And since you said "waste jet fuel", where is it from and what's the quality of it?

I think he works at an FBO so it would be Jet A with Prist, I think. It's from doing the daily sump checks on the engines and should be filtered and pretty clean.... Don't know how much 2 stroke he's using, though....

Fuel drained from the sumps may contain water as that is the main reason to dip the sumps and companies have to pay to have it taken away. As has been stated "jet A" jet fuel needs lubricant to run through an injector pump. Over the years I have known many who have used it but all added dino motor oil one qt per tank. You cannot use jet engine oil like Castrol 5000, Mobil jet 2 or synthetic motor oil. I never knew anyone that had any problems with it.

Is he getting this fuel for free or for some seriously discounted price over pump diesel? Because at about $1000-$1500 a pop for each VP (if he installed them himself) or $1500-$2500 a pop (if he had them installed), he have to weigh the difference on whether its worth it in time, effort, money, etc. to run the JP fuel or just buy at the pump.

He's just not putting enough lube in it. I ran 2 quarts of TCW-3 per tank, didn't have a problem unless it was cold. If it was a water problem, his injectors would be shot.
