Injector Pump Question

Wouldn't you know it? While I was 1000 miles away from home in Palatka, Fl the dreaded 0216 code popped up. I have been having apps problems for months and have nursed it back to health with the reset procedure but no indication of pump problems. Anyway I was fortunate to not be stranded and took it to the local Dodge dealer. They diagnosed the pump failure and replaced it under warranty. I only have 60000 on it. I asked if they checked the lift pump and the mechanic said it was pumping over a liter and was fine. I thought one of the big problems was the lift pump going out first thus causing the injector pump to burn out. Has anyone else had this happen where the injector pump goes out first and the lift is fine? And I remember a post where one of you guys posted the apps replacement procedure with detailed pictures.. Can anyone guide me back to that post? Thanks.

The APPS reset is here.

And yes, many VP4's have died with good fuel pressure.

I had the dreaded P0216 for 50K miles after my warranty run out... I did reset apps and no help...I drove it with symptoms and did the ignition key turn off/on while driving to reset pump electronics (no mechanical problems) for the entire 50K miles and everything was copacetic... Mine was an electronic gremlin thing till I got cash to replace VP-44.

Mucho Luck,

Gary

sounds like you got the best deal possible on the VP replacement. They replaced the VP and didn't give you an in-tank pump. Now go get a holley blue, or the holy grail FASS and enjoy good fuel pressure.

IMHO the volume test that dodge refered to is not effective. I didn't notice that you have a fuel pressure guage installed. That to me is a necessity on a 2nd gen. Injection pump failures don't have to be associated with bad fuel pressure, some are caused by electrical failure but with bad fuel pressure at the vp44 you are seriously stressing the injection pump and failure will likely occur.

The reason why they do the flow test is because they do not fully understand the DP issues associated with flow characteristics of a pump. The pump may flow a liter/min or whatever they do into a bucket, but the added restriction of another pump (VP44), may mean that the LP is not pumping anything! Heck if you take a centrifugal pump designed too flow 1200 gpm, and let it flow too atmosphere instead of in a pressurised setting, it may flow 4800 gpm. So does this mean that this pump is fine?? NOPE! The only true test is too flow from the schrader v/v. And i dont think they do this. Or rig up some kind of calibrated flow measurment device.
