Injector Pump

I have had to replace two injector pumps. The first one was at 97,000 and second one at 210,000 miles.

Is this about normal or do I possibly have a problem causing these failures?

What can I do to minimize these failure rates?

Is there a source of supply for injector pumps? The last one cost me about $1500 including labor. There must be someplace that have rebuilds that sell for less.

Thanks.

Do you have any gauges installed? Get a Fuel Pressure gauge to monitor your lift pump condition. If it is weak, it will toast the Injection Pump eventually.

That's not bad mileage out of them.
Almost 100,000 per.

Really the only thing you can do is monitor the lift pump pressure.

24 valve injection pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel they are pumping,
keeping a steady flow to them prolongs their life.

Another preventative measure is use a fuel additive.
It will add a measure of lubricity to the fuel, and help keep your injectors clean.

Just don't use and additive made for gasoline engines, as most of them contain alchohol which is a lubricity destroyer.

Powerservice, Stanadyne, Lucas are a few of the big ones.
I'm sure I've forgotten someones favorite additive,
if you do a search here for "additive" you'll find the ones I missed.

That's great mileage out of a VP44 injection pump, and $1,500 including labour ain't bad at all.

I change out VP44's from $1,350 to $1,450, including the pump, but I need your old pump back.

My first VP44 went out at 75K without any mods, since 75,000 miles, I've replaced 4, and now, VP44 #5 is almost dead.

Run some lubricant through them (NOT Tranny fluid), I would do as Phox recomended, and that can extend their life. (Maybe I should listen to myself, LOL)
