carcajoucummins went over 300,000 on his original VP. I put 154,000 miles on mine and changed it out before spiking the wire and adding bigger injectors. I figured it would fail if I didn't. We both have ran airdogs since they came out.

Keep the truck. The newer/rebuilt VP44's are an improved design, I am sure some of the others can tell you why.
Get a FP gauge if you do not have one, all pumps can fail. If they do, they can take the VP44.
Did you get new fuel lines to replace the stock with the banjo bolts? Many believe the banjo bolts limiy fuel to the VP44.
Outside of that, the only other issue is the dash cracks.
So, with these issues taken care of, these trucks are hard to beat. They typicly give the best mileage of any diesel from the big 3, plus the Cummins is solid, strong, reliable.

My original vp went out at 103,000 miles along with my lift pump while driving to town. Putting in new injector pump and FASS fuel pump today, i'll hopefully get to test them out and see if it made any improvements.

99 2500 QCLB auto 103,000 miles
4in Stainless Silverline Exhaust, New Vp, FASS fuel pump as of 11/16/06, Edge Juice W/Attitude Moniter to be installed, rollin on BFG's Mud Terrain 305/70/R16's

I know someone with well over 700,000 miles on his 99-24 valave and he's only has to replace the water pump. I can assure you he's never has a fuel pressure gauge on it.

You got to remember, the numbers on this board represent and very tiny group of actual CTD owners. And by the polls taken most are fairly young, and we have to be honest. When we were all 21, we all took our trucks through the wildest things we could find. Heck. I had tires off a Bobcat on my GMC and I burned them all the way slick on maybe 3 burnouts. Yea it was cool, but who cares what I did to the motor or transmision. As long as it went, I kept smoking them.

I don't think you will find one longer-living than that. I know of one that lasted 160,000, then all the one's I know (first hand around home) of were from 60k to 120k, and that's 6 within that milage that went down. I only know of one vp truck with the factory pump and it only has 50k miles on it.

My first LP went south around 116K. Got guages right after that! It started acting like the 2nd LP was going to bite the dust around 128K or so. Put FASS and Edge Juice/Attitude on around 132K(?) and now I'm about 139K and hope I'll go many, many more miles before I need to stick more $$ into the beast.

I have 282,000 on my pump.
I usually add some fuel treatment but not like clockwork.

Replaced lift pump at 214,000 wasn't dead but pressure readings were getting wierd.

Replaced the alt. and rebuilt the starter, both were working but I like to keep up PM. Just replaced water pump, started leaking.

I use Moble syn, oil - change every 25,000 miles.

I've got almost 250,000kms on mine now, and still original VP-44. I just added FASS 150gph 1.5 years ago, not because of lift pump failure, but because I also did other mods at the time. I put a VanAaken chip on the day I bought my truck new on May 02/2000, and never took it off since.

I have always put in some type of lubricity additive, and PowerService every tank since day one. I have never had any fueling issues or problems either, but then I have probably never run fuel tank down below 1/2 a tank more than a few times. These 2 factors DO help in prolonging life of injection pumps.(I used to follow this(15 years ago) in my 1986 Blazer 4x4 with 6.2l diesel without a failure either, and those were really prone to crapping out)

My neighbor had a 2001 Dodge Dually all stock(he traded for a 2006 dodge), with over 180,000kms without a VP-44 failure either. Marine is also over 225,000kms without a VP-44 failure either, maybe he'll chime in with exact mileage(and he has comp on). I know of a few others also with lower mileage without a failure either.

Mine went at 69000. Its the original as far as I know. I didnt have a fuel pressure gauge but I do now, I also upgraded to the big line relo kit. My vp was replaced under warrenty though. If it goes again im getting a 3rd generation with the common rail!!

I can't say I haven't run out of fuel, and I usually fill up after the light comes on which then takes 28 gallons.

I would guess the use of PowerService has helped things out-1 quart per 4 tanks summer 1 per 3 tanks if is cold out.

I also put in a shot of Marvel Mystery Oil time to time.

Also I try and change my filter about every 50,000, my is a 99 so it has the large filter cartridge. I changed it out this last Monday and really didn't see where it was dirty.

I have 140,000 miles with an EZ on it for the first 3.5 yrs, then a Comp. It has set for 3 deployments at 6 months each, 4 LP's and ran out of fuel once (fuel level sender crapped out). I am not worried about it. Other than the fuel sender, I can't think of anything else that I have HAD to replace from out of my pocket.
I love my truck! Approx 114 days until I get to see it again! WOOHOO!

146,000 on my original VP and I'm on my 2nd LP. I ran it for ?????? miles with a dead LP before I got my FP gauge and that was 26,000 miles ago. Hopefully the next one will be this good.

If you've got the new VP44, and a new FASS System, along with the Edge w/ Attitude (Guages), you have cured the most common problems with these engines, no reason to sell now. But if you really want to, download the Edge to me, and sell the rest......

40k on a rebuilt one,and no warranty because I have the thing tapped for the edge, but next pump goes in sans tap,I'll miss the power, but I can't afford 1100 every 40k.... (the old IP made it to 120k)
