Idle auto in Neutral?
Idle auto in Neutral?
I understand idling our auto's in neutral is best......but why, as opposed to idling in park. Would the same apply to gassers? How about other brands, furds, chevys, studabakers etc ;D
Re:Idle auto in Neutral?
The design of the Dodge Auto does not circulate the tranny fluid in park.
Thus idling in neutral does circulate fluid and helps get all parts lubed and ready to go to work.

Torqueflite and the later versions have always been this way, gas or diesel. If the check valve in the valve body leaks, the converter has no fluid in it or I guess half full, you can idle in park forever and never fill it. A few seconds ideling in neutral will fill it properly. I still have a '79 van that has a leaky check valve. Got it that way 11 years ago, got it cheap because the trans was bad. Still runs fine but I always put it in neutral for a few seconds when it is cold. Every manual says to check it in neutral not park.
