Cool How long does it take?

Have had the radiator, heater core and thermostat replaced about a year ago and it takes about 15-20 minutes to get up to 190* running temp. Is that normal?

Is that about how long it took before everything was replaced? Is that at an idle or running down the road? Whats the ambient temp? What your elevation? In the summer in MN if I let it idle to warm up that is about how long it would take to reach 190* if it is 70* out. If it is running 190-200* while driving and dosent overheat everything seems ok to me

Idling, loaded, highway, town, empty? What is the ambient temperature? It all matters and gives a better chance of getting the right answer to your question.

Good questions........In the am in NorCal it is usually 35-45 deg and I let it warm up for 5 min then hit the road and go easy on it. At highway speed it still take ~ 15 min. All my other cars...5 min and I'm at operating temp. Seems long to me....but, I have 245K miles and all is well. Drive on.....

That sounds perfectly normal to me. Diesels take a long time to get to normal operating temp. Thats good practice to let it warm up at least 5mins before driving. It makes me shutter when I see my neighbors all ready in reverse before the oil pressure has built. We have been in a cold snap here in mn lately. this morning at about -15* i let my truck warm up for an hour just so i can shift it. After being plugged in all night the qauge still didnt move over 100* after an hour on high idle!! Ohh. just have to luv the cold!! HAHA

I plug mine in on a timer for 2 hours every night. I drive 10 minutes to work and the temp hand is just starting to lift. When I drive at 40 mph easy, it take 10-15 minutes to hit 90* C ( Canada ) normal temp at 30-40* F outside temperature. So yes its sounds right to me too.

I agree that 10 to 15 minutes is about right for the 5.9. I usually let the Beast warm up for 4 or 5 minutes before I drive away. I try to take it easy on the fuel feed for at least a few kms while everything that moves gets warmed up. I am grateful that I am not in that cold snap that is dominating Sask, Ab and Manitoba right now. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Cheers!

Mike

Takes forever to warm up to operating temp when it's cold out.

Just a side note.

I dropped a piece of cardboard between the rad and intercooler last winter to block off airflow and speed warm up time. I cut an 8 inch diameter hole in the middle to let air to the fan clutch.

Apparently this is not a good idea. It caused my A/C system to blow off the freon (or whatever they use now) when it got hot and I had to get it recharged to the tune of $250 after finding out I had marginal A/C in over 100 degree heat.

the correct way is to block the grille off, not the radiator itself....

Just a heads up!

Does it also drop below 190 when driving down hill. If so the thermostat may be sticking open.
