How do I crank the engine without it starting

I'm getting ready to install a rebuilt turbocharger. I read somewhere that I should crank the engine, and keep it from starting, to build up oil pressure and flow to the turbo bearings. So that the turbo doesn't start spinning too fast without an oil supply. How do I crank a diesel engine and prevent it from starting ?

Pull the plug on the lift pump. it'll run a liitle bit till it runs out of fuel from that point on, but that means you'll have to reprime it again.

No need.. Once you have the charger installed just pre-oil the charger before attaching the oil supply line.

If you unplug the harness at the VP ( and it is easy to do ) the engine will crank but not start.

you can pull fuse 9 or 10, can't remember which off the top of my head and you will get a crank no start. All you need to do with a new turbo is like above suggested.
