"Hit-N-Miss" Fuel Filter Change
"Hit-N-Miss" Fuel Filter Change
About to do my first fuel filter change. Why is it so
hit and miss with these. What I mean is some guys take
5 minutes don't fill the canister and fire it up with no
problems, then some guys do everything right (refill
canister , bleed air ,etc) and their truck won't start,
so they end up cracking fuel lines, injector lines , bumping
the starter multiple times and killing their starters trying
to get their engines fired up.

Maybe it has to do with the type of fuel filter? I use only Baldwins on mine I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. 3-5 minutes and He starts right up, never had to bleed any air of the fuel lines. Knock on wood.
I use Fleetguard, fill the canister, bump the starter once to let the LP top it off and away I go......the truck usually runs rough for 10-20 seconds but other than that there seems to be no other problems..........
Mine has been a nasty pig since day one. Even when I fill the can/crack the banjo to the vp/ purge till it squirts out/ crack banjo at VP/ purge till it squirts out it fires and runs less than 5 seconds. Then its the crack injector lines routine till it starts. That was with the Carter pusher in line with the LP (18-19psi) I hope filter changes with the FASS and new VP will be smother. Maybe some VPs prime better than others?

I've never seen one not start right up...if you take your time to refill the canister completely, allowing fuel to soak into filter and refilling to eliminate any air. Don't know if it makes a difference but I realize I never changed filter on a warm motor...not on purpose...just always did it first thing on a Saturday morning - in case it would not start right up. Could this make start up easier???? Something in my brain says maybe.
Either I've just been one of the lucky ones or a little patience make the difference?
Ratsun - Have changed filter on my FASS...expeirmenting with 5 micron filter. Just filled up new filter with fuel from old, screwed it on and it started right up!

You have no idea how happy I will be if I can say the same when I change mine.
I had to crack injector lines to get it started initially after installing the FASS?
I like the idea of a 5 micron filter, keep us posted on how it works(psi/life,ect) Better filtering has to be a good thing.

I too had a hard time in initial FASS install...but changing filter - no problem.

I changed 3 stock filters on mine without any problems. Just dropped the new one in, bumped the started a couple times, and it fired right up. Maybe stumbled a tiny bit for 10 sec., but that's it.
With the FASS, I've had the filter off a few times. Just spin it on and bump the starter to fill it and it fires right up. As long as you don't loose prime between the FASS and the VP (which doesn't seem to happen when removing the fillter), no cracking of fuel lines is necessary.

I think the problem stems from marginal or dead lift pumps. The VP will suck from the tank but once you break things open air enters and will break the suction if the lp isn't up to snuff. A filter change with hard priming is the way lots of folks without a fuel pressure gauge find out their lp is going.

Thanks for the link

I think your probably right to some degree but not in my case. Like I said with the pusher I had 18psi and still no luck? Fuel gauge since truck was only a year old and LP always up to snuff? Perhaps I was just missing something but I always did the job when there was someone around to crank the key for me cause I knew what I would have to do to get her running?
