fuel pressure light flickers

I have a new to me 2001 Dodge Cummins that came with the low fuel pressure warning light installed. Under hard acceleration the light will flicker but never goes solid and will go out when the rpm's level out? Anyone else experience this? I plan to start by replacing the fuel filter. any other suggestions.

thanks

sounds like you are on the right track. replace fuel filter, run it at wot and watch your light. it would be best to get a fp gauge installed. much cheaper than a vp44.

Do not just rely on a light. You also need a guage so that you can see the number.

I also have a 2001 Cummins with the low fuel light flickering at wot, this just tells me Its time to change the fuel filter. I keep a close eye on my light & still have the original (touch wood) vp44 in my truck & on my 2nd lift pump in 185,000kms.

When I first got my previously owned '01, low psi light was first thing in. Even after filter change, light saved me a bunch of $$ telling me the LP was going out. Not even 55mph on highway and it was starting to glow. Now, with an Airtex down on the frame, picture speaks for itself. It gets 19-20 at idle.

Yep, my 01's light stayed on so I checked to see if the airtex was ok. Had 20psi at idol and 14psi at wot. I am gonna get the gauge. Thats my second sending unit for my light too. pos, been more trouble than it was worth.

is there a needle valve before your sender? mine has a needle valve, has not faultered in 4000plus hours of use, also have a edge juice sender.

without a snubber of some kind the fuel pulses from the VP will kill the sender, also if your mounted directly to the VP the vibrations are not kind to a sender as well.
remote them away from the vp, for a longer life

Installing a Gage is the "best" way to go. You may want to drop the tank and check the intank screens. There are two of them. A flat one on the bottom and a cylindrical one inside the plastic barrel. I've had both of them clog up. If you go inside the tank, take the time (and money) to install a "drawstraw". It can be done by one person in your driveway. The one I installed came with very good instructions on how to measure and cut it to the proper length. I don't allow my fuel capacity to get below 1/8th, to avoid sucking air on hard stops and/or acceleration.

You don't really have any idea what fuel pressure is without gauges. Idiot lights got their name for a reason. That said, I'm considering adding a light to complement the mechanical gauge. I'd hate to run with low pressure because I wasn't paying attention to the gauges. I got the idea when my check gauges light came on and alerted me that my alternator had taken a dump & was about to cost me a tow bill.

I got mine mounted straight to the VP, and it does flicker a little when under exceleration. At the same time my gauge says I have above 10 psig of fuel pressure. When the light stays on, then you have problems. As said before you need a gauge.
