Engine Swap

I recently lost my 2nd Gen Cummins auto 2500 to a patch of black ice writing off the box and extended cab and damaging the front suspension and steering. Everything else is pretty much undamaged and I walked away unhurt. It had 145,000 kms. on it and was attached to a "built" transmission and had lots of "goodies" attached to it. I have bought a replacement 2 years younger (2000 model) with 216,000 kms. on it and plan to swap over the engine and transmission from the first truck.

Having never done this before I would appreciate some advice and guidance together with any tips and tricks you guys might have. Is it possible/practical to remove the engine and tranny as one unit and is there a source on the net for a check list for the procedure?

Thanks guys for any input.

When I got my 99 2500 it had a cracked block. I got a another cummings out of a wrecked truck. I took off the front bumber and slid it out the front.
It was a simple sway imo.

Your going to need heck of a engine lift to pull the motor and trans as one. The Cummins long block is roughly 1,000lbs to start with. Rickbays got it, pull the front bumper/etc and out the nose. Expect to swap the wiring harness also.

Thanks guys, I was intending to take it out through the front. I have a front loader on a tractor to lift it so weight isn't too much of a problem. I just wondered if there was any advantage in taking out the engine and tranny as one unit. 67HOTROD do you mean just the wiring harness that travels across the front of the block or is there more?

Do you have a 4x4? The length of the whole thing might give you clearance issues as you wedge it out of the engine compartment. front bumper or no, it's a pain. I had all that stuff removed AND the tranny off and it still didn't just "slip right out."
