Engine Oil Pan removal, whats the best way?

My oil pan will have to be replaced soon since the road salt up here in NY has got large sections of it turning into hanging potato chips. I picked up a new pan and thought I would see what a dealer gets for the job. They said its a bit over 8hrs labor and that alone would be over $700.
I searched here and found the dealer book says remove the trany to get at it but it was suggested that, that was not nesessary, just pull the motor mount and lift the engine. Obviously the engine lifting is what I want to try. Can any one give me some particulars on that R&R? would you need to pull the valve cover to get the engine up hi enough in the back? What to disconnect?
Thanks

Its a big job. The book says you have to remove the transmission and I would lift the engine as its pretty tight fit. I just did one yesterday, but the engine was laying on the floor. The pan had a big dent in the bottom, it even pushed up my oil pick-up.

Here is a clip from the service manual.

I've heard its not a fun job. Is you pan close to rusting though or just surface rust? If its not close to through, you can get products that will neutralize the rust and make it into a paint ready surface.

Theres no "easy" way. But while your doing it just think about the $700 your saving.

Its really not that bad, just lift the motor, remove bolts , lower pan, undo pickup, remove pan, takes about 2 hours total.

Ok, sounds easy.... But, do I take the valve cover off for more clearance? How about the trany mounts, leave them be and just lift the engine? or do I need to get the trany loose also to give me more engine play?
The pan has layers of rust that have fallen off. Im sure I could black beauty blast most of it and POR15 it but Im afraid it wouldnt take much to pop a holt in the very pitted remains.
Did I ever tell ya I was movin south (nother damb yank) when I retire in 25 months? The year I paid $4.46 per gallon for heating fuel (800 gal) and the $6200 home tax pretty much nailed the move as a must do!
Any other lift the engine details?
Thanks

I removed mine a couple of months ago using a cherry picker on the front lifting eye. Make sure to remove or at least pay very close attention to your fan and schroud (i broke mine) Make sure that you have a ratcheting wrench to get your oil pickup tube off and on. Good luck!
