Question Whats the best way to remove the engine

I just purchased a engine, tranny with wiring and computer with 46000 miles on it out of an 06 3500. The reason I am replacing the engine is because I gernated it. What is the best way to remove the engine out of the truck. I have already removed the bumper, condenser, radiator, and the intercooler. I would like to remove the engine and the trans together. What are some of the thing to watch for and does and don't s?

if you want the most room possible, I guess poppin off the cab would make for lots of room......... not sure how easy that is or if that is out of the question for you.

No the cab is going to have to stay. How much does the engine and trans weigh? I have a 1 ton cherry picker. My worrys are the fuel lines. Are there any special tools I need to remove them?

I would separate the engine and tranny. That iron block is Heavy! It will take a little longer but you will make sure that your cherry picker can handle it.

I would separate the trans from the engine also, It will make it much easier to handle. With the engine and trans bolted together you will need to manuver the assembly from under the cowl, over the cross member and over the lower radiator support. Most of the shop cranes I have seen are rated at 1 or 2 tons when not extended, fully extended they are only 1/2 or 3/4 ton. Make sure your crane can handle the load at the point you have it extended. I think the engine and trans together are close to 3/4 ton.

there is a cross member that connects both lower inner fenders if you do not remove you will have to remove head to get out and in,the cross member has 4 13 mm head bolts, but you can not remove crossmember with out cutting, you tap as far as you can to left side and than you only have to cut about 1 to 2 inches off makes life a lot easier with that out i have put in about ten of these engines i would also seperate the trans from engine or you have to tip it very far to clear the lower cross member due to the huge hump in the oil pan make sure your engine crane is strong enough to hold

How about that cross member at the front??? (third gen) Pulled my engine out couple weeks ago, and the whole issue was a breeze EXCEPT that cross member at the front, that bolts on each side.
I removed the bolts thinking it would slide over and out, but no dice. With that in place it was a PITA trying to get the engine out, the front was hiting that, the top back was hitting the cowl. Managed to get it out really had to shoehorn it past the cowl.

SO getting it back in, I will take that cross member out one way or the other, but seems like you have to take a quarter panel apart, at least at the front.

If you take the trans and adapter off, you can lift the engine a little and pull the oil pan and oil pickup off which will make it much easier to pull out.
