Engine misfiring under accel...
I've been reading the forum for awile, but this is my first post and first question. I also searched and didn't find any info I could use.
Here is what is going on. The truck is a 2000 3500 2wd DRW 5 speed, with 150k on it.
Anyways, a couple months ago, the truck would "misfire" trying to accel from left and turns. Yes, very odd. Now, its doing it more often, now turning right with accel, going straight with hard accel, or even hitting a large dip in the road.. It just seems like the motor isn't getting fuel for a split second, then comes right back to life.. This is getting very annoying when pulling my trailer, so I'm asking you guys for help. I am an avid do it yourselfer, so enlighten me please
Thanks for the help
Corey

I wouldn't "think" it would be fuel pressure, because once it does this inital hickup, it will pull all the way through the powerband fine.. Not argueing, just trying to figure it out.. Maybe I just have a buildup of water, I havn't drained it in awile..
Diesel fuel has a little bit of water in it (that's one of the reason's it gels in the cold) and water is bad stuff. In 72K miles, I've drained maybe a 1/4 cup out. MAYBE.
Check your codes. Is the truck hard to start after it's warmed up? Do you have a dead pedal? If you get a P0216, that means your injection pump is shot. Check your fuel pressure and get back to us on that.

Two thoughts:
1 - From reading here - I have read about problems with the fuel pickup in the tank. The problem you describe may be from that - Is there any difference if the tank is full or not? Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? If so what does it tell you?
2 - Do you have the pump wire tapped? I had a Banks Ottomind box. About a year ago upon hard accelleration (getting on the freeway etc.) the truck would miss - skip a beat or two. Anyway it turned out to be the ground for the Banks Ottomind. Ran the ground wire to a negative cable and that particular problem went away.
I would also check the codes as Bigblue has suggested.
Good luck

Would the lift pump cause this kind of "sputtering" while only under load?
My 2000 6spd 2500 cummins recently started the "sputtering/hesitance" when under acceleration or climbing even small hills. It is absolutely only when under load though, I can run the rpms idle and up to 2500 with not even a hint of a "sputter" when not in gear, but in gear it sputters through the powering, and is even more obvious on a hill.
No Check Engine Light at all.

Insufficient fuel supply on a diesel will only be notable when you need horsepower. To rev the engine at idle it won't need many hp, climbing a hill or accelerating will need hp.
You can say that horsepower=gallons/hour
So check your fuel pressure under load!- The FP at idle is not really significant.
