Code P2149 and popping noise under hard accel
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guys:
Can anyone tell me what my issue might be here... 2004.5 4x4 stock engine. Recently while driving it, leaving the store, truck started vibrating and running very rough... would not accelerate at all... pushed throttle to floor, no acceleration, just bogged down more... cleared up on its own, but it has done it a couple of times... also, notice a "popping noise" when i accelerate hard from a stop or under a strain -- ie hold brakes, release or start from a dead stop and accelerate hard... code is P2149 i think... could this popping be a slipping transmission or caused by bad injector(s)? I have 45000 miles on the truck... also, when it pops, i notice a stream of black smoke and every now and then some white smoke is also thrown into the mix... any ideas... thanks in advance...

Might be rail pressure relief valve on the fritz. Not getting proper pressure to the injectors which might be the popping and no acceleration issues you are having. Someone much more knowledgeable will chime in Im sure. But thats where I'd start. Just cap it and see if it runs better. If so, go to a Cummins dealer and get the part. Much cheaper than your Dodge dealer will sell it to you for.

UPDATE FOR ANYONE WITH THIS ISSUE:
Today I changed the filter and while doing so, I noticed that in a twist, close to the rear injection wiring harness connection there was two small rub marks where bare wire were being allowed to touch. I unplugged the injector wiring harness plug to the rear connection and seperated the wires and found to bare spots. Note, Didge had done some injector replacements early in the truck's life, but did not re-attach the clip that keeps the wiring loom off the engine. I guess that with enough vibration the wires wore holes in the plastic covering and started shorting out... This accounts for the loss of power that I would sometimes have and also the popping noise... I drove it hard today, under a load and nothing happened... The smoking under a load is gone, the popping is gone and the enige light has gone out, but I can still get the code if I query the system with the ignition key on and off three times... What are your thoughts... fixed or not? Will the code leave the ECM or will I still have to take it to Dodge for them to clear the code of P2149???? Hope info this helps someone else too...

it will take a few, or many key cycles to clear the code from memory. my check engine light comes on in the cold every once in a while, and it runs fine, after a few key cycles, couple days, its gone.same thing for the codes on the gauge cluster. keep checking it. if it is running fine, your good.
