Vibration around 40mph

I got something kinda strange going on. Seems right around 36 to 43 mph, my trucks tends to shake a little bit. It doesn't seem to do it all the time either. I don't remember it doing this until recently. Sometimes, you can't even notice it, and sometimes you can. The shake seems to slow for it to be tires are wheels. What do you guys think? Ever hear of anything like this or am I just nuts?

Jack,
I've noticed the same thing on my rig ! All I can think it would be is the tires out of balance. I notice mine at around 40-43 mph....... hmmm, how strange !!
Chip [undecided]

Re:Vubration around 40mph

Hmmm. I guess I'll have them checked. I did some experimenting today and found that the truck did it in neutral as well as running through the gears. The engine speed, or gear didn't matter, it still does it no matter what. You're probably right so I'm gonna have it checked out this week. I just thought it would get worse as speed increased, but it's very smooth at 65-70mph.

Re:Vibration around 40mph

Jack there is another thread on this. I get it at 40 to 45, with the trailer on it goes to 50. I had it with the stock truck, changed the shocks, put new wheels on it, new tires, still get it. It got worse when the pu body came off. Now and then it does not do it. I have an idea but not sure. One shock goes foreward, one goes back. I think that with the slightest out of round or balance the axle can rock opposite the shocks. Lower air pressure can help, but I can't do that with the wieght. Probably when the wheels are indexed just right from turning corners they balance just right. I have gone for miles without it and then next trip it will be real bad. If you find a cure please post it, I am not alone on this.

Wow, this gets more interesting as we go down the road here. I replaced the shocks on the truck about 2 months ago and noticed this about 2-3 weeks ago. Heck, it could have been doing it longer without me noticing it. It's pretty subtle so who knows? I'm going to research this some more.

Jack, My 98 was bad about it. Really noticed it when slowing down. My '01 has just a touch of it, barely noticeable, but there. I think it has to do with the length of the frame, shocks, drivetrain slack, etc.

Re:Vibration around 40mph

Mine does the same thing when the tires get wore a little. It has done it more recently since the weather has changed. I really notice it when pulling the trailer at around 50. So I usually get away from the slow 50. Of course the trailer tires are packed tight with air this does effect the truck.

Re:Vibration around 40mph

Mine does it too, right about 40-45mph. It doesn't shake (or is not noticeable) when I have OD off.

I heard someone say it was in between gear shifts or something, but I can't tell you where I heard it... or if it's even right.

Re:Vibration around 40mph

Mine will do it when shifting, when in gear or when in neutral so I don't think it's that. I'm going to get my wheels checked just in case, but it could be the shock issue as well. I just replaced those recently. Interesting stuff.

I had something similar. Chased it for about 4 months and had different mechanics chase it, too. Which cost too much coin. One day, playing with my trailer hitch, I bumped the spare tire. It was hanging a little loose on its cable. Tightened it and vibration gone. Good luck.
