Engine dies, power loss, code 1688, 1689, 1691 and 1693
Hi. I purchased my first diesel pickup less than a year ago. It's a 2001, QC with automatic. I really like it except every now and then it likes to lose power, cut out and even die. It's most likely to do this when the tank is low or if I just filled up. If I let it sit for a few minutes it will start. Sometimes it dies and we go through this sequence again. Eventually it'll run and I can go on down the road.
The engine light comes on. From reading posting on this site I learned how to read the codes, which are 1688, 1689, 1691 and 1693, which corresponds with internal fuel pump controller failure, no communication between ECM and injection pump module, fuel injection pump controller calibration error and DTC detected in companion module.
I've gathered from the discussions one likely reason is that the lift pump and the VP (injector pump?) is going out.
Is there any other possible causes? I'm hopeful that there may be another source of the problem.
Replacing the fuel filter didn't help any.
At this time I don't have any gauges, but I plan to install a fuel pressure gauge right away.
Thanks for your help.

well usually with all those codes you also see P0216, Injection pump timing failure, which is the kiss of death for the IP. Get your fuel pressure tested ASAP, may be your lift pump is out but hasn't killed your injection pump...yet.

More than likely your lp is on its way out and often times it gets your ip. You might be lucky to and be lucky and change your lp, if it doesn't help you will have to change your ip. You should be able to get a new lp from your local cummins dealer for around 150 -200 bucks. if you need any help on finding a lp or ip let me know and i'll try and help ya out, i know the feeling, i just dropped 1600 bucks on a new lp and reman ip and ip is goin out with less than 500 miles
