Angry dodge not running right

02 dodge ram 3500 cummins 187,000miles
airdog fuel system

Truck was ideling fine in the morning while warming up. It then started smoking and kind of pulsating while ideling. There is a little dead pedal like its missing then it comes back to life. Smoke is blueish in color and reaks of diesel. Changed the water seperator (had one laying around). Ordering a fuel filter now. They have both been on since November Could this happen from the fuel filter being clogged? It had lots of debris in it when i took it off. I shook as much as i could out and put it back on. Seemed to run a little better for a minute but then back to the pulsating, dead pedal, and smoke.

checked the turbo it's fine
wondering if it might be the APPS again or an injector

Please help asap. This is our main work truck and costs us lots of money everyday it's down.

I will be monitoring this thread all night. Thanks for any help

forgot to add. I have a superchips tuner on it and have returned it to stock.

No codes are showing. This is what also makes me think its in the fuel system since it has an aftermaket on it.

could this maybe be an injection pump? i have a reman on there now. put an old apps sensor on there with no change at all in the running condition. Only conclusion i can come to is the injection pump is pooping out and the pulsating is coming from the airdog fuel pump pushing fuel into it. Got me im no mechanic.
any help at all would be appreciated

It seems a lot like a failing injector pump to me. The dead pedal is a good sign of that. The APPS can cause a dead pedal as well, but wouldn't cause the smoking.

dont jump on the injector pump too fast . So long as your lift pump is putting out enough pressure. My gut is a bad injector.

picked up an injection pump today and replaced. Runs great again. 1,000 for the pump and 400 for labor by my mechanic.

Glad to hear it's solved. Hopefully this pump lasts forever.

Glad to hear you got it fixed !! It hurts when you have to buy a VP-44 though.
