The only time this has ever happened to me is when a fuel pump went out or my pump crapped out on me.

an air leak can cause this. do you check for leaks and/or try priming the system. do you have at least 1/4 of a tank of fuel?

I have over a 1/4 tank of fuel. Are you refering to leaks in the supply line from the tank ?

It's easy to check the lift pump. Just open the water drain valve on the fuel filter and turn the key to bump start twice and leave it on. it will run the fuel pump for 30 mseconds. if you are getting fuel out the drain pipe, you have a VP pump problem.

Hmm , I just thought of something. There are a bunch of posts about our trucks having faulty sending units for fuel level in the tank. Before you check the tough stuff, why not dump a few gallons of diesel in from a jery can. It would suck to do a lot of work just to find out you were out of fuel.

I think you can still get 18psi of 'fuel pressure' if you have air in the system.

yes you might a leak in the supply lines. not sure what fuel pump you have but check lines from the tank to the pump.

I have a Fass lift pump. I thought of the faulty sender and dumped 5 gal of fuel in it. I'm checking the lines for a suction leak before the pump. Is there a way to check the VP to see if it is ok ?

Turns out that I had a faulty sender in the tank. Once I bled the air out of the system it started right up ! Thanks for all of the help.

Dang - and I was ready to apologize all day today for being stupid. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. Glad it was a cheap and easy fix.
