Dead Pedal at times

Dead Pedal at times

i keep getting a injection pump timing code(not sure of number right now) and also a dead pedal. the dead pedal is getting worse. happens most of the time over 70 MPH and 205 degrees engine temp. can let off throttle and let go to idle and will have throttle back for a while.

does the code and the dead pedal have something to do with each other? is this problem the VP going out or something else?

seems like when the timing code sets the truck has more power

this truck weighs almost 10,000 lbs with all my crap in it.

Most likely the vp44 is failing. Mine failed only when it was hot and the motor temps along with tranny temps were high. It never failed at cooler temps. What i found was odd is that when my tranny in pan temps were 165 the dead pedal would come in. Replaced the vp44 and its been a year with no problems.I cant preach enough that a full set of guages is important to help monitor as well as diagnose your potential problems.

my trans temps are not up but my engine does run hotter than i think they should.

I know the gauges are important. i have them in my personal truck BUT trying to get the company to drop $300 for something they dont think is important is another story.

your problems and mine sound close to each other.this might be also what i wrong with my trans.

Mine did the same thing as what Nitrousn mentioned. I installed a new VP and been ok since. It was around 128 degrees the day mine died.

I was going through the same thing. I found it was the module on the VP-44 injection pump.

I had the same problem with the dead pedal at 75 mph. I then noticed I had the P0216 code and later that week the Dodge dealer installed a new lift pump (in tank) and a new injector pump as well.

well. maybe a little hope here, on my 01' a couple years ago had that problem & it turned out to be the throttle position sensor, & a buddies 99' did the same thing, both trucks had injector pump problems as well, but they just died & wouldn't start back when the pumps went bad, actually have the pump off the 01' right now ready to pick up a new one in the morning. may check the throttle position sensor first, Dusty

I did forget to mention that if you have restriction in the fuel supply you will get dead pedal and you will get a P0216 code. Before spending the money on a VP-44 I suggest checking the fuel pressure both at idle and at 75 mph if that’s possible.

I went through that about 2 years ago due to the screen in the tank becoming plugged up.

Do not rule out the possibillity of the Throttle position sensor being bad, I had the same problem on one I worked on for somebody else, and also had the same problem on a Powerstroke I had once, so be sure to check that out.

Mine has started the intermittent dead pedal thing also. It happens when cold or warm. Just turned over 89k miles on my 2002. No codes with the key on/off trick. Does factory warranty cover this problem?

I would guess your throttle position sensor is bad.

Contacted the service dept at the local Dodge dealer and he said the current warranty will cover the TPS and or pumps. whew
Didn't need the extra expense right now.

LP and VP toasted- Dodge moved LP to the tank

Took the truck to the dealer today. After diagnostics, they decided to replace the lift pump ( move it to the tank installation modification) under warranty. I told them my concerns about the VP probably going to be next. I got a call about noon from the service Manager. After the LP was replaced and fuel filter PM'd ($60) the VP failed it's volume test. A new VP44 will be installed Tuesday under warranty.
*I'm glad it bit it at 90k miles and not @ 101k*
I WILL install a pressure gauge next week.

-Anyone know how long the replacement pusher pumps are lasting after relocating to the fuel tank????
-Has there been a decrease in life of VP44's after the Dodge modification?(due to lower fuel pressures).
-Has anyone used a tank pusher pump AND an OEM located LP in tandem?
