Dead Pedal
Dead Pedal
I've had my truck since 2000 (It's a 2001 5.9 3500) and have not had any problems until now..... Reading all these posts today has me replacing my pick up pump, the VP44, Cam Sensor and checking the cable as well. I have no idea where to start. I do have a "dead pedal" or close to it. Truck starts fine and idles fine but I have noticed a power surge/cycle in the amps and it takes 5-10 minutes for it to straighten out to the normal 14.5 amps. I know the glow plugs take a few amps but they are new Optima yellows. After initial warm up, the pedal will go to the floor and I get a slow increase in mph to the point of 28-30 mph in first gear and then a shift to 2nd. If I keep the pedal to the floor, it will slowly increase to 35-40 mph and shift to 3rd. It goes like this until something gives or resets and full power is restored. Then and only then can I let off the pedal to resume normal driving with one caviot. At 55-60 mph or towing my boat, it will go to dead pedal if I don't constantly move the pedal or let off entirely to idle, push it to passing gear or "remash" it to restore it to normal. All of this is habit for me now but I am afraid it's going to hurt something else if not fixed soon. Can you help?

Genos Garage is a good place for gauges. I would get a mechanical FP gauge.
Your LP may still be good, but chances are against it. Airtex has a decent OEM replacement. FASS also has an OEM repacement, much more $.
The VP44's go bad for numerous reasons, especially if the LP goes; They can go bad regardless. Mine went at 52K, pressure gauge, etc.
If you have the budget, a Pyro & boost gauge are good to get too.
Good luck on the repairs.
