Dead pedal

After I first start my truck first thing in the morning, I idle down the drive about 100 yds. when I turn on the county road to speed up the pedal seems dead. The truck will only rev to about 1000 rpm. It will go about a 1/4 mile this way. During this time I pump the pedal, it seems like when I take my foot off the pedal all together about that 1/4 mile mark the truck takes off just fine. It seems to have the same power as it had the weeks before. Any ideas of what I should keep my eyes open for. I thought it may be a lift pump, I had one changed at 18K, 88K.

check the codes 0121 would be a apps problem, and 0216 will be a fuel injection problem.

replace your injection pump asap before you have to pay for a tow.

x2. Mine did this right before the injection pump took a dump on me.

Check the codes, you'll probably have P0216 which is "fuel injection timing module failure" or some such according to the factory service manual. My check engine light was never on, but the code was stored in the computer from the times it did the dead pedal nonsense.

Get the codes read before you do anything and before it leaves you stranded. You have the signs of both the APPS and the VP. If it is the APPS, you can do the "reset" and the "recal" in the "Tech Facts" above and it may help or fix your problem. If it's the VP, don't fool around.....it will leave you stranded. Mine was the 1688 code, which means it will barely idle or not even start. Mine happened 1200 miles from home....don't let it leave you stranded.

If you don't have a fuel pressure gage, GET ONE! Most agree that low fuel pressure and flow contributes to VP death. There are several options for OM pumps. I went went the FASS HPFP over two years ago, and didn't replace my original pump until a little over 2000k miles. Maybe I was just lucky, but the shop foreman at the Cummins shop where it was replace said the FASS most likely help the pump last as long as it did.
