"Dead Pedal"??

Check your lift pump fuel pressure. There's a Schrader Valve under the black screw on cap on your Injector Pump. Fuel Pressure checking kits are available at most chain type auto parts stores. They connect at the Schrader Valve same as many GM gassers...the mention of diesel scares some of the counter sales people off. Check my picture gallery.

I had exactly the same symptoms of dead pedal you have. Only no codes. The dealer ran diagnostics and found lift pump dead and VP44 not up to specs. Replaced both the LP and VP.

Thanks for the advice fellas. Yeah, I just fininshed soing the APPS reset a few minutes ago. I followed the directions to the tee. I did the 'key trick' and i still got the same frickin codes!!!!
So what is the next rational step?? Shoud I get gauges installed first and use the Schrader valve tester first?? or should I just pay up to a mechanic or dealer??

Just get on the horn and try to find a VP44 for under 1200. That seems to be about the going rate. If you need to get your truck back on the road soon, don't throw money at the guages yet, because the guages won't fix your crappy injector pump. Replace the lift pump and the inj pump, then get some guages. Guages will do absolutely nothing for you if your truck won't go down the road. But you can bring your buddies over to tell them how cool they look in your broke truck if ya want to. LOL
Just my opinion here, but I would reccomend going with a FASS pump instead of the new in tank pumps the dealers are putting in. Do a search for FASS, and IN TANK PUMPS, see for yourself.

You will get the same codes until you have twenty five starts without an issue. Make sure your codes are clear, before you read them again. Give it a while and watch for new codes and "dead pedal" problems. Check your fuel pump pressure as soon as possible. If your lift pump is bad, I suggest the Walbro pump from Glacier. It's a heavy duty pump.

P0216 Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure
High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure or possible
wrong or incorrectly installed pump keyway.

I agree withCoyote204.

For the short term you're gonna need a lift pump and a pressure gauge to keep an eye on the lift pump fuel pressure. If the VP44 has been damaged from lack of enough fuel to cool and lubricate the innards, it'll need replacing next.
Consider using a good fuel additive that restores lubricity(lubrication) to your fuel and keep the fuel tank at least half full so the return fuel has a chance to cool before being pulled in again by the new lift pump.

Intermittant dead pedal can also be a MAP sensor... Mine does this about every 4-6 months. I swap to my spare MAP sensor (10-minute job), thoroughly clean my old map sensor inside and out with electrical contact cleaner, put it back in the box under my rear seat and wait for that loss of power to roll back around...

In my case the dead pedal was caused by the eletronics inside the pump. I was able to have it placed.

Okay fellas, thanks for all your advice! My Dodge is parked for now! I have to drive the gasser all the time I talked to a fella from Antrim Diesel in Greencastle, PA. And I told him about my issues. I want to get it looked at and see what exactly the problem is before i go and reapir something that dont need to be repaired. Does this sound logical?? If it just the lift pump, should I do the pupmp relocation kit or get the Walboro setup?? I hope and pray my injection pump didnt go out also! The guy up at Antrim told me not to drive it as much for fear of the injection pump crapping out along with the lift pump!!

That's the line of thought in this situation, lack of lift pump fuel pressure has hurt pumps according to the local injector pump rebuilders I've talked too.
Have you checked the lift pump fuel pressure? An old set of freon R12 gauges/lines can check it too...the screw on fittings accept the Schrader Valve.

Either way the pump will be relocated. There are some reliable setups presently being used and they do deliver fuel to the injector pump.
As long as the one in my signature works well, I'll keep it.

$1500 installed.



VP44 is the injection pump that provides the fuel
to the injectors at a very high pressure.
At least on the 1998.5's - ... ... 2002's?
