dead injector pump?

I am looking at a truck to buy that starts and idles but the pedal does nothing. If the truck still starts is it the lift pump or the injection pump that died. Could be throttle cable but he said a shop said needs a pump and estamated the job at 3000.00. '01 24V truck Thanks

could be the throttle position sensor... use a scanner to pull any codes and go from there.

Injection pump

It sounds like the injection pump. Does it start up right away or does it take longer than normal? We had an injection pump go bad on a truck and it took a long time to start and it would idle just fine but it didnt have any power. But usually if the injection pump goes out it is cause by the lift pump goin out first. I take it that the truck doesnt have a fuel pressure gauge? And by the way the $3000 is way to much money to change one of those pumps.

What codes are showing? Here's an excellent write-up on how to diagnose VP44 problems

FWIW if it is the injector pump you can buy one and install it yourself if you're fairly handy with tools. The injector pump runs around $1000 and the lift pump (if you need one) runs $300-400.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Do three key on trick to read codes. 216 and 1693 good indication of VP fail. Will they reduce price by $3000.00?? Try for $4K off if really intrested. DIY and save.

Dead Pedal

I've had my truck since 2000 and have not had any problems until now..... Reading all these posts today has me replacing my pick up pump, the VP44, Cam Sensor and checking the cable as well. I have no idea where to start. I do have a "dead pedal" or close to it. Truck starts fine and idles fine but I have noticed a power surge/cycle in the amps and it takes 5-10 minutes for it to straighten out to the normal 14.5 amps. I know the glow plugs take a few amps but they are new Optima yellows. After initial warm up, the pedal will go to the floor and I get a slow increase in mph to the point of 28-30 mph in first gear and then a shift to 2nd. If I keep the pedal to the floor, it will slowly increase to 35-40 mph and shift to 3rd. It goes like this until something gives or resets and full power is restored. Then and only then can I let off the pedal to resume normal driving with one caviot. At 55-60 mph or towing my boat, it will go to dead pedal if I don't constantly move the pedal or let off entirely to idle, push it to passing gear or "remash" it to restore it to normal. All of this is habit for me now but I am afraid it's going to hurt something else if not fixed soon. Can you help?
