Code 0216...how long do I have??

I just got the truck out of the shop for some front end work and when I started it I noticed that she was surging a little. I noticed that it does this every once in awhile lately, but only at idle. I have no dead pedal or any surging any other time. I replaced the lift pump with a Walbro unit about 6 months ago and have been reading great fuel pressure since, but was reading low before I installed the pump. The truck only has 61,000 miles on it. I cycled the key 3 times and got the following codes; 0500, 0216, and 0382. I understand that 0216 is the "death code" for the VP, but how long do ya'll think I have?? Could it be something else? Also, is it worth it to have the dealer replace it?

I was just over a year with mine. Depends on if you have free towing or not.

Mine 01.5 had exactly 68,000 miles on the button when I got the dead pedal.
No, it can't be "something else" it is what it is unfortunately.

ramlovingvet has it right. I've hear of them going 15K miles, others make it two weeks.

Clear the codes first (as with any repair) it could be a history code caused by past low/no fuel pressure.
run the truck and check again for codes later, if the 0216 comes back you likely have a problem.
BTW depending on your "surge" it can be the AC cycling on when heater control is in any posn except vent

O, and look at the last post on this thread:
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...=186195&page=2

I JUST did mine today, 7 hours, but not all that bad! Those videos helped me 100%!! My next one will only take 4-5 hours I bet! (plus I had 2 runs to the autoparts store for tools!)

P.S. I did the cam sensor too, very easy when the pump is out, but I don't see how you could do it any other time!! I also did the boost sensor, just to kill this problem for sure! And I did, runs like a rocket now. Thanks!!

I went to the dealer and had the codes cleared. They also said that it might be a prior code from running low fuel pressure from before I installed the Walbro lift pump, and they also agreed that the A/C cyclng might be the cause for the surging. Anywho, I am just going to run and wait to see what happens. I'll keep ya'll updated and thanks for the help

also a surge can occur shortly after start up while the grids are cycling, (even on a hot engine) if this is the case watch the voltgauge as it will drop as you "hear" the surge. hope this help's and hopefully the 0216 was an old history code
