Check eng light on my '99 2500

While driving home today I stopped at Walmart for a minute; as I was leaving the parking lot, the throttle acted funny (slow response?) then it seemed to work okay. That's when I noticed the check engine light was on. The truck seems to start fine and throttle response since has been normal. So, how do I find out what codes there may be? Does anybody have any ideas what might cause this?

Go to your local parts store, checker, auto zone etc. They will scan the codes for free.

From the sounds of things (slow response) on the peddle translates to dead peddle, you keep pressing and nothing, then boom it takes off.

Report back with the codes you get from a scanner, unfortunately you can't do the key trick on a 99 to read the codes. It's free so try (I've read some late 99's can) so it's key on, key off, key on, key off, key on and read the odo window. Don't start the engine doing this just put the key to the run position.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? If not I would HIGHLY suggest you get one to save your vp$$ or new one if that's the case.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply; yes, I have a fuel pressure gage, but I'm still running the stock lift pump. At idle, it holds 12 PSI, at highway speed it holds around 10 or 11 PSI. I called a buddy of mine who works at Waters International Trucks here and he is going to talk to one of the mechanics for me tomorrow and see if he can borrow something to download the codes.

The codes will tell the tail, FP sounds normal so your good there. Let us know what the codes are. On the bottom of the forum page there is a DTR Wiki link. On that link you can read what your codes mean. They are still confusing but it will point you in the right direction.

keep us posted.

This sounds alot like what my truck did when it threw map sensor codes.

The solution was not to ever stop at walmart.

Good luck with the codes.. we'll pray for no injection pump related ones for you.

Was going to say, sounds like Map Sensor problems to me.

I was driving home one night from work, slowed to make a turn, went to accelerate and the truck just didn't feel/sound right. Drove oh 1/4 mile, slowed for train tracks and began to accelerate. That is when the CEL came on and my acceleration sucked The truck would still accelerate, just very very slowly. Turns out there was corrosion in my Map Sensor plug

I got the code downloaded today....

Okay, I drove the truck to work today, and the check engine light did not come on when I cranked it! It has not come on again, but I took it by our local fuel injection garage and the owner checked the code for me....turns out it was for the throttle position sensor. He recomended to wait to see if it happens again before I change it. I was told the only place to get the part is from Dodge, and they did not sell just the sensor. You had to buy the whole assy (he did say Cummins sold a sensor, but the plug on it was a female, not a male). Does anyone know if there is another source for a sensor that would work?

Search for user name Timbo01, he has a direct replacement APPS for much less than Cummins. There is a thread in the 24v ares that is less than 2 weeks old.

here ya go.
