changing VP44

anyone know where I can get a step by step guide to changing a VP44? I have a pretty good idea, its just easier, and you avoid repeat steps or mistakes, by looking at someone elses install.

thanks!

Simply Google "VP44 installation instructions" and you should see plenty of them. Even though there may be some tricks or pointers varying from one to the other, they should all be very similar. Just know that you will need a gear puller to separate the VP shaft from the timing gear. Some vendors will supply this puller for nothing as long as its returned.

The youtube vid is pretty good but part 5 never made it.

The FSM is a good ref. Its not hard just time consuming and detailed. If you have mech skills and get the gear puller/pusher tool you will be fine.

I have a couple of generic pullers, will these work or do I need a special tool?

Generic steering wheel puller, can't remember the metric thread sizes of the bolts.

Be aware that you will probably have a bowel movement the first time you hear one come off, sounds like a cannon going off, and you will swear you just broke your Cummins in half.

It's just the gear.....

go with diesel Dan..I did..
no gear puller..I did need to rig something from the lift hooks and bolts removed and some sockets..I didn't buy nor rent any thing special.

its not that hard..take you time..I seem to remeber I spend 6 hrs over a couple of days..no rush..double check the injector lines..I found I left a couple loose at the Vp44

Go with Diesel Dan it's what I used. Man that gear was a pain to get off but it finally poped. One tip is that you do NOT have to loosen the 2 rear injector lines at the head. Use a wire to hold the conections to the VP44 out of the way to get the pump out. Lining the key up was a pain as well I used chalk to mark the end of the shaft as a refrence and with a mirror to get things lined up. After the gear broke loose it all was a piece of cake. Have fun
