Changing VP44
Changing VP44
Ive done a lot of work on gas engines and some on diesels but never an IP change .......... and i want to save some money and do it myself i can get the few tools i need im just wondering how hard this is to do..... and can i turn the engine to the correct position without a special tool
also i want to gain some performance but dont want to spend more than 1500 on an injection pump i see bosch sells a kit with a high performance lift pump and normall vp44 would this do much for me????

put a socket and 1/2" drive ratchet on the alternator nut. It'll only turn over 1 direction , it'll slip in the other. I used a small round mirror on an extendable handle and small maglight to see the keyway. remove the nut, look in and locate the key, have buddy rotate the alternator nut until key is at 12oclock position. not vertical to the pump because the pump is clocked. very easy to do. remove fuel lines is the best thing to do, remove in 2 bundles. I didn't remove the lines and it made it much harder to do. still doeable but harder. thats a good write up to follow. have a good assortment of hand tools availiable, extentions and a 3/8" wobble is handy for the upper passengerside mount nut.
thanks guys i ordered a bosch vp44 with a highperformance lift pump and filter for 1200 thought it wasnt too bad i figured id save the 500 more for the ind injection that i wanted so badly.......anyhow i figure i can change this no problem and im not about to give some dealership 2000 bucks to do it thats for sure

Silverfox,
I just sent you a PM with a very detailed procedure for this, including a list of every tool you should need. I used it when I changed out my VP44 last month. I made sure I had all the tools it listed before proceeding, and completed the job without any hitches. Best thing to do is copy & paste it into a MS Word document and print it out to have with you in the garage. It is very long, so I sent it as a PM to save space on here--if anybody else needs it, PM me and I'll get it to you.

24vCTD, I got one too, same thing. I got one with pictures and text but it is about 7 meg so it is a bit hard to send. I also have a text only one.
It would be really cool to put a detailed instruction together and have it available here someplace. Lots of guys would use it. Someting like a "sticky"

I replaced my vp44 yesterday. It wasn't hard at all. I took my time and it only took 4.5hrs. Just make sure you have plenty of rags around when you purge the lines of air. It might help if there's a second person around so while you start the truck he could be watching for fuel.
