Does anyone know if i can check rod barings by pulling the oil pan down?

Noises are hard to figure out online.

But, if it makes you feel better...mine has sounded that way since '99 and even worse since ULSD fuel. Some of us are adding 2 stroke oil to the fuel tank to help lube the pumps and quiet it down some.

I suspect what you are hearing is normal. If you are unsure, maybe send in for an oil analysts would help.

I run a 100:1 fuel/oil. Check your exhaust manifold gaskets. Rumour has it that a leaky gasket can make it sound like the engine is coming apart.

i'm with these guys...these inline motors rattle and roll quite a bit but that's how they operate...and if you're curious about the rod bearings and want to pull the oil pan then set aside a weekend and a place where you can swear profusely...lol...you have to jack the motor up to get enough clearance to drop the pan out of the way...and it's no fun at all...2cents...

My usual fill is 100 litres, I add 1 litre of oil. Basically, a litre a tank.

Not sure where you live, but in Canada or US, all you have to do is email Blackstone Labs (that is one company that does oil analysis, there are more) and request a kit. They send everything you need to get an sample analyzed to you for free. You take a sample of oil at the next oil change, then send it back to them with a credit card #. They will email and send a hard copy of the report back to you. Then you need to surf on over to the forums at bobistheoilguy.com, and do some reading to interpret the analysis. That will tell you if your Cummins is sick.

Oil analysis is about $20. Well worth it IMO.
