bad injector pump ????

The truck will start when cold but after its driven it will not start untill it cools down.

Took it to the dealer it had a 0216 code injecton pump timing failure. They said it needed a lift pump so i replaced it but it did not help.

Any ideas before I spend alot of money that I dont have on a new VP44.

Thanks

Re:bad injector pump ????

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but... thats exactly what my truck did and it took an injection pump to remedy the problem. If your half-handy you can replace it yourself with the help of a cheezy autozone Haynes manual. Been there, done that, used the t-shirt as a red rag :'(

Re:bad injector pump ????

I am having the same problem with my 98.5 24V. Will start real nice in the cool of the morning . But after I run around in it , shut her off , she has a tough time starting. Especially when the weather is hot .
I installed a temporary gauge to check lift pump pressure, perfect pressure there in all conditions.
My only hope was that it was the supply line from the fuel tank . It looks beautiful, and no signs at all of any seepage.

I have seen posts from 2 other guys with the same problem, I havnt been able to get an answer back from either one to find out what they did to fix it. Email me later next week and I will let you know what happened.

OR- If you find your problem could you PLEASE post it here so that fellers like me can be helped ? :-

I hate changing a part in hopes of finding the problem . That can get expensive real fast . I cant see paying the dealer $2000.00 if it is the inj pump . Kinda between a rock and a cactus.

Im biting the bullet tomorrow and ordering a new inj. pump.
I have a parts guy at NAPA who gives me a great break on parts prices. Im getting a rebuilt pump for $591.00 .
I cant believe Im happy to pay that but it beats the $1000.00 plus price tags I have been seeing. He says if I have any probs with it ever bring it back and he'll take care of me . Cant beat that.

Hope ya find the problem soon ,

( me? , Im taking the truck on a 8 hour round trip drive tomorrow, I hope she holds up for another 500 miles) ;D

Well Smokin-N-Ram,

Had a buddy hook up his diagnostic puter to my truck.
The only code that popped up was

#0216 Inj. Timing Control Circuit Malfunction

Now I ned to find out if I can test this myself. My wimpy manual dont help me at all.

Re:bad injector pump ????

Having just had my injection pump replaced due to different symptoms but the same code. That code can be caused by the vp44 being bad or too high or too low fuel pressure/flow. The very first thing they did was check the flow of my lift pump. It passed (which is good because they just replaced it 3 months earlier) they then replaced the vp. A fellow local member was having the same code took it to the dealer and according to his fp gauge his pressure was good but the dealer did their new flow test according to the tsb and said his flow was to low and they are repalcing the lift pump. If you go to dodgeram.org I think that tsb is listed there and it spells out exactly how to do their new flow test on the lift pump.

Re:bad injector pump ????

have same problem and the lift pump was replaced a few months ago. I actually had no starting problems until the pump was replaced. It was replaced due to internal noise. Now I cannot start relaibly when hot . Sometimes it waont start at all hot. I hesitate to jump to the conclusion of the pump until I know someone was cured by this. I have had the ECM flash updated and two dealers look at this and no fix. Has anyone had this same problem absolutely cured?

Re:bad injector pump ????

Well Timber and Barry ( by the way thanks for your input ! )

The guy that put his diagnostic puter on my truck printed out a "Things to check" list .

Heres the things it said to check ;

1)Tranfer pump fuel inlet restriction acceptable ?
2)Pressure drop across the filter acceptable ?
3)Inj pump gear alignment correct ?

If yes to all , Replace Inj. pump.

Its all pointing to the Inj pump for me although I havnt actaully checked for proper flow as "Timber" suggested. ( that check would tell me if item 1) is acceptable)
That will be my final check then , its new inj .pump time for me.
I assume that my gear alignment #3) cant change unless it has been taken apart and reassembled incorrectly ? (which it hasnt)
Not really looking forward to replacing the inj pump . Expensive and it appears to be a tedious project. I will keep you posted . Please
do the same if you have any further info.

Thanks ,

~Brett..................

Re:bad injector pump ????

Well........I put a new injection pump on today and the truck runs like a new one.

This was the first time I have ever put one on. It was easy took about 2 hours just take your time pulling the pump out so the key doesn't fall into the timing cover.

152k out of the VP44? Man I'd better get 300k before I touch such a pricey item on my truck. I always thought these engines were bullet proof?

Re:bad injector pump ????

I can sell new (or rebuilt) VP44's for $1100. Avaliability is sometimes limited but they are good pumps. I will guarantee them for 1yr, if you buy a new (good part #) lift pump, or send me a proof of purchase for one that you bought in the last 3 months (must be good part #). I will not sell any junk, my reputation and income depend on it.
