Bad front drive shaft
Bad front drive shaft
Anyone have a front drive shaft for sale? I put it in 4 high the other day in the snow, and a god awfull grinding and crunching sound came from the drive train. Checked u joints, and sure enough, bad. Got 3 replacements, pulled the shaft, and saw there was serious grinding of the center ball like thing at the transfer case end. What is the purpose of that thing any way? It looks like it is too far worn to re-use, anyone have a drive shaft in good shape to sell? I have the joints already. Also any info on that center thing would be nice too. I have a 2002, 2500 with 6 speed, Thanks for any help.
iam not really sure what u call that little ball thing is eather but i just ordered one for my pickup and all3 u joints and the little ball thing was 40 dollors i should pick it up monday
I have one sitting in my garage with a trashed CV joint just like yours.
Stupid design plain and simple.
My replacement has 3 grease zerks, one for that center ball thingy.

Original lasted about 2 years, replacement has been going strong ever since.

I just had mine replaced under warranty, new one is nice and shiny, no rust at all on it yet, haven't gotten under there to see if the new one has zerks or not. not sure why it went, only 50k on the truck, maybe 2k in 4wd. I think it spinnin the whole time has something to do with it.
Mine is so ground up, i don't think it's reusable. The pin end is just about wore off, the cup end is ground back to the inserted ball thingy. It defenatly should be a greasable point. Looks like i am either getting a new one, or an expensive used one. Thanks for the help.

I just had all 3 u-joints and the ball replaced in my driveshaft. I ended up taking it to a driveshaft shop and let them do it. I had all greasable u-joints put in.

Sorry to hear. I called Tom Woods 4xshafts, they said the whole cv joint would have to be cut from the tube, and a new one welded on, rebalanced and such. Now i am searching for a used one. There is a used 1500 on ebay, but i thing the u joints are smaller. Any one know?
My front shaft came apart rolling down the hwy at 75mph. Scared the living hell out of me and my passengers, I literally thought my engine was coming apart. I had a driveline shop rebuild it for just over $200. Good luck.
