ujoints bad, can i go with one piece drive shaft?

as the topic states....

one or all of the ujoints on the rear driveshaft are bad.........no squeking, no grease thrown.......just a horrible vibration when slowing from about 25 mph t 0 mph..........this is with the truck in neutral, and no braking....

there is a little play in the carrier bearing but not much.

my good friend had the exact symptoms as my truck except that he has 12k and i have 62k.......his was the center u joint bad, replaced under warranty. no go for my, as i am out of warranty.

called the dodge house, they said 120 retail 95 shop rate for each u joint........WOW

so i went to a driveline service shop, and they said that they will replace the 3 joints for 150.00 total.. he then asked if i haul heavy loads, and i said yes (i was grossing 33k the day before, and i do that weekly at least) he recommended a one piece driveshaft.... is that okay to do in a crew cab hauling mucho weight?

also, i might menting that there is no vibration when a trailer is hooked up whether it is empty or loaded.....i attribute that to the driveline angle changing.

thanks for any advice...

i think your warranty is still good. it's 7 years or 70,000 on the drive line.

the dealer told me that it ends with the 36k warranty...... i am not sure which is correct, but i went ahead and had a local shop do the work.

ended up being the center ujoint was frozen up(could not rotate by hand) the rear was trashed....they replaced all three ujoints with spicer greaseable joints and a new carrier bearing for a grand total of 180.00 and they were finished with the truck in about 1.5 hours........worked out great.

for anybody in the houston area, i would highly recommend driveline service co, on beltway 8 near pine street in pasadena.

Good ol' dealers givin' to the little guy once again.

I just glanced over the warranty and it specifically covers driveshafts in the 7yr/70,000 mile warranty.

FWIW you have to pay a $100 deductible after the 3yr/36,000 mile warranty is up. So it sounds like you paid an extra $80 BUT probably got way better service.

I was inspecting the underside the other day and noticed a sticky fluid on the underside of my bed over the first u-joint on the output shaft of the transfer case (rear driveline). Looks like fluid is leaking out the end of that output shaft seal. I don't know much about u-joints, so it's going to the shop ASAP. I don't have any vibration in my driveline from what I can tell. The truck has 26,000 as of yesterdays snowmobiling trip.

you will like the spicer greaseable joints, they are far better than OEM ones...

On my CJ I run the greaseable ones in the driveshafts and front axle joints are 1-pc spicer joints (forged non-greasable), one of the only joints that I could find that haven't exploded within the first 100 yards of rock trails.....only thing better is CTM style joints and they are a TON of coin....

Spicers have never let me down...

money well spent I'd say....

Goldenbear,

If the leak is as shown in the picture below it's the companion flange and needs to be replaced.

Could you pleases post the part #'s for the spicer u-joints? When I was looking for one none of the parts stores could find any info on them. I had to go to dealer and got robbed. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
