Shutter
When I got this truck a 96 ram 2500 5.9 cummins auto it would start up and idle just fine, when you put it into gear it would shutter and die. It would always start up and again, idle fine but drop it into gear and it shutter and die. If you did get it to run when dropped in gear it would do just fine at all speeds. It was a qt and a half low on tranny fluid, I filled it and the shutter and dieing stopped. Now what it's doing is shuttering under light acceleration at speeds above 40 and any rpm. Give it a light press on the peddal (or let up on the peddle) the shutter goes away. Has any one had a problim like this? Please help.
Sounds to me like torque converter clutch chatter. Not enough line pressure to hold it in unless you feed more throttle , let up and it releases , eather way the shutter stops. Pay attention to what going on. In 4th the last shift is the converter lockup. Will it shutter in 2nd or 3rd or 4th on the way up ? or just after the last lockup shift. If just at the last shift then lock out overdrive, it will then go into lockup right after the 3rd gear shift and you should have your shutter then at a slower speed.
If all this is the case ,and it doesnt shutter under power ,I'd say you need an adjustment somplace. When was the trans oil and filter changed last . And when was the bands last adjusted?
