Attention: Check your auto trans cooler lines!
Attention: Check your auto trans cooler lines!
After driving my new Goerend tranny around town for a couple of weeks I noticed ATF draining at an ever increasing rate from under my truck. 4 cans of brake cleaner later I found the leak. I put the truck in drive with the parking brake on and the transmission warmed up (the cooler starts flowing at around 110 degrees F) and saw it leaking from the front of the truck. The tranny cooler lines are silver colored aluminum 1/2" lines that run under the engine, over the engine brackets, and to the cooler. If you trace your lines from the water/tranny fluid heat exchanger (right side of engine that looks like a round manifold with those 1/2" lines going in and out) to the front they will pass over a brace about 8-10" behind the tranny cooler. These lines were rubbing on the metal brace and sprung a leak.
I did an easy repair with some fuel hose cut longways and placed over the tube and secured with a couple of hose clamps over the hole. A better fix is coming when I can devote the time, but this one seems to work for now....
The nice part is that the entire underside of my truck is now preserved in ATF, ready for a harsh winter here in southwest Florida, heh, heh....
